CIA Spy: Why Elon Musk Today Is NOTHING Like Elon 10 Years Ago

Former CIA officer and outspoken whistleblower John Kiriakou has drawn a sharp distinction between the visionary tech mogul of a decade ago and the current, politically polarizing figure, Elon Musk. According to Kiriakou, the shift is so profound that the individual who once stood primarily as the champion of sustainable energy and private spaceflight is virtually unrecognizable today.
The Visionary vs. The Political Power Broker
Ten years ago, Elon Musk was widely celebrated as an engineering evangelist. His public image was centered on ambitious, future-defining projects: the electric revolution via Tesla and the multi-planetary mission via SpaceX. He was often seen as an outside-the-system innovator, challenging legacy industries with audacious technological bets.
Today, Kiriakou and other critics argue that this image has been fundamentally replaced by that of a political power broker deeply embedded within the Washington ecosystem. This transformation is highlighted by Musk’s advisory role within the current administration’s now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an experiment critics say delivered little verifiable value despite its high-profile status. Musk himself popularized the unit, once dramatically holding up a chainsaw and calling it the “chainsaw for bureaucracy.”
Contracts, Controversy, and Control
The core of the criticism, particularly from a former intelligence community figure like Kiriakou, revolves around the convergence of Musk’s massive government contracts and his political influence.

  • The DoD and SpaceX: SpaceX holds billions in contracts with the Pentagon and NASA. This makes Musk’s public political leanings and government appointments fraught with potential conflicts of interest, as he is advising the same government that is his company’s largest client.
  • The X/Twitter Acquisition: His purchase and subsequent management of X (formerly Twitter) transformed him from a technology figure into a frontline combatant in the culture wars, making highly controversial decisions about content moderation and access.
  • Intelligence Community Tensions: The reports of Musk’s visits to agencies like the CIA and the Pentagon—often surrounded by controversy over the security implications of sharing classified information—illustrate a level of access and entanglement with the national security apparatus that was simply not part of the Elon 10 Years Ago narrative.
In Kiriakou’s view, the once-unaligned innovator has become an establishment insider, trading his image as a purely technological revolutionary for a role as a political operative, fundamentally changing his relationship with the American public and the world stage.
