Why Jyotiraditya Scindia Cut Ties With the Congress: “I Felt Invisible Within the Party”

Jyotiraditya Scindia’s decision to walk away from the Indian National Congress in 2020 was one of the most dramatic political exits in recent years. A leader with deep roots in the party and a legacy tied closely to the Congress’s history, Scindia’s move raised uncomfortable questions about internal dynamics, leadership, and the future direction of India’s oldest political party. Speaking openly about his decision, Scindia has said that he left because he felt “invisible” — unheard, unvalued, and unable to serve the people effectively.

A Legacy of Loyalty to the Congress

For Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Congress was never just another political platform. His father, Madhavrao Scindia, was a towering figure in the party, and Jyotiraditya inherited not only his constituency but also a deep emotional connection to the organisation. Over nearly two decades, he worked his way through the ranks, serving as a Union minister, winning multiple elections, and building a strong base in Madhya Pradesh.

Yet, despite his experience and electoral success, Scindia says his influence within the party steadily declined. According to him, decision-making became increasingly centralised, leaving little space for leaders who raised grassroots concerns or offered alternative perspectives.

Feeling Sidelined After Electoral Success

The 2018 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections marked a turning point. The Congress returned to power in the state after 15 years, and Scindia was widely seen as one of the architects of that victory. However, when it came to leadership roles and policy influence, he felt marginalised.

Scindia has stated that his repeated efforts to flag issues such as governance failures, farmer distress, and youth unemployment were ignored. Over time, this sense of exclusion deepened. “When you work relentlessly on the ground but feel your voice doesn’t matter, it forces serious introspection,” he has said.

Ideology, Not Opportunism

Critics accused Scindia of abandoning the Congress for personal ambition, but he has firmly rejected that narrative. According to him, the decision was rooted in ideology and the desire to deliver results, not in the pursuit of power.

He has argued that political parties must evolve with changing realities and remain responsive to their leaders and voters alike. In his view, the Congress was struggling with inertia, internal confusion, and a lack of clarity, making it difficult for leaders like him to function effectively.

Joining the BJP and a New Political Phase

Scindia’s entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dramatically altered Madhya Pradesh’s political landscape, eventually leading to the collapse of the Congress government in the state. Since then, he has established himself as a key figure within the BJP, serving as a Union minister and playing a prominent role in national politics.

Looking back, Scindia describes his exit from the Congress as painful but unavoidable. He has maintained that remaining in a party where he felt unrecognised would have meant compromising his ability to serve the public.

A Symbol of a Larger Problem

Beyond his personal journey, Scindia’s departure has come to symbolise the Congress party’s broader organisational challenges. His story reflects the frustrations of leaders who feel caught between loyalty to tradition and the need for relevance, respect, and impact.

For Jyotiraditya Scindia, leaving the Congress was not about rejecting his past but about reclaiming his voice. It was a defining moment that reshaped his political identity — and one that continues to influence debates about leadership, accountability, and renewal within Indian politics.
