Is Bethesda Taking Too Long With The Elder Scrolls VI?

When The Elder Scrolls VI was officially teased in 2018, fans of the legendary RPG series erupted with excitement. After all, Skyrim had already become one of the most influential games of all time. But seven years later, with no gameplay reveal and no release date in sight, a pressing question dominates gaming discussions: Is Bethesda taking too long?

A Wait Unlike Any Other

The gap between Skyrim (2011) and The Elder Scrolls VI is now the longest in the franchise’s history. Earlier Elder Scrolls titles typically arrived within four to six years of each other. This time, the silence has stretched across console generations, leaving long-time fans wondering whether the studio misjudged expectations when it announced the game so early.

The 2018 teaser, while thrilling, offered little more than a sweeping landscape shot. Since then, Bethesda has shared minimal concrete information—fueling speculation, impatience, and countless online debates.

Why Fans Are Growing Frustrated

For many players, the frustration isn’t just about time—it’s about communication. Years have passed without gameplay footage, story details, or even a confirmed setting. Compared to studios that regularly update fans during development, Bethesda’s quiet approach makes the wait feel even longer.

Another factor is shifting priorities. Bethesda Game Studios spent much of the past decade focused on Starfield and ongoing support for other projects. While understandable from a development standpoint, it meant The Elder Scrolls VI remained largely in the background until recently.

Bethesda’s Defense: Quality Over Speed

From the studio’s perspective, the long development cycle is intentional. Bethesda Game Studios is known for massive open-world games built around player freedom, complex systems, and deep lore. Rushing such a project, they argue, risks technical problems and unmet expectations.

Studio head Todd Howard has repeatedly emphasized that the majority of the team is now focused on The Elder Scrolls VI and that development is “progressing well.” According to him, the goal is not just to make another Elder Scrolls game—but to redefine what the series can be for modern hardware.

The Weight of Expectations

Another reason for the delay is the shadow cast by Skyrim itself. Few games achieve that level of cultural impact. Mods, re-releases, and an active community have kept it alive for over a decade. Any successor must compete not only with modern RPGs but with fans’ nostalgia and sky-high expectations.

In an era where rushed launches can permanently damage a game’s reputation, Bethesda appears determined to avoid repeating industry mistakes.

So, Is the Wait Justified?

From a fan’s perspective, the frustration is understandable. Seven years after announcement—and more than a decade since the last mainline Elder Scrolls title—feels excessive. Yet from a development standpoint, the scale, ambition, and pressure surrounding The Elder Scrolls VI make a long timeline almost inevitable.

Yes, the wait feels painfully long.
But Bethesda is betting that patience will pay off.

If The Elder Scrolls VI delivers a richly detailed world, modern systems, and the sense of wonder that defined Skyrim, the years of silence may eventually be forgiven. Until then, fans remain stuck between excitement and exhaustion—watching the horizon, just like that first teaser promised, and hoping the journey will be worth it.
