From a Bihar Village to Cutting-Edge Tech: The Extraordinary Journey of Satyam Kumar, India’s Youngest IITian
In the small village of Bakhorapur in Bihar’s Bhojpur district, a child prodigy named Satyam Kumar was born on July 20, 1999, to a humble farmer’s family. With limited resources and no formal schooling until Class 8, few could have predicted that this boy would shatter records and inspire millions through sheer determination and intellect.
Satyam’s genius became evident early on. At just 12 years old in 2011, he attempted the highly competitive IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) and secured an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 8,137. Dissatisfied with the result, he prepared rigorously in Kota, Rajasthan—the coaching hub for IIT aspirants—and retook the exam the following year. In 2012, at the age of 13, he achieved AIR 670 (some sources cite 679), becoming the youngest Indian ever to crack the IIT-JEE and earn admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology.
This feat surpassed the previous record held by Delhi’s Sahal Kaushik, who cleared it at 14. Satyam joined IIT Kanpur, pursuing a dual BTech-MTech degree in Electrical Engineering, graduating in 2018.
Undeterred by his early successes, Satyam set his sights higher. He moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in brain-computer interfaces (BCI)—a field focused on decoding neural signals to control devices like robotic arms or aid those with motor disabilities. Under Professor José del R. Millán, he contributed to groundbreaking research, including innovations that accelerate BCI learning through noninvasive spinal stimulation and universal interfaces allowing thought-controlled gaming.
He successfully defended his PhD thesis in 2024 at the age of 24, earning accolades such as the Best Poster Award. During his doctoral studies, Satyam interned as a Machine Learning researcher at Apple from May to August 2023.
Today, as of late 2025, Satyam Kumar works as a Machine Learning Systems Research Engineer at Texas Instruments in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. His expertise spans deep learning, speech recognition, and brain-computer interfaces, continuing to push the boundaries of technology. 3 “LARGE”
