Bengaluru, December 29, 2025 – In a landmark move towards achieving complete technological self-reliance in defence, the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Software Development Institute (SDI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to jointly design and develop an indigenous digital communication system for airborne applications.
This collaboration, announced on December 29, 2025, represents a decisive step in reducing India’s dependence on foreign technology for critical defence systems. It directly supports the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aimed at fostering self-sufficiency in defence procurement and bolstering national security through homegrown innovations.
The MoU was signed by Air Vice Marshal R Guruhari, Commandant of SDI; Prof V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras; and Dr M J Shankar Raman, CEO of Pravartak Technologies Foundation, IIT Madras’ technology innovation hub.
The partnership focuses on creating secure, reliable, and high-performance digital communication technologies tailored for the challenging dynamics of airborne environments. Such systems are vital for modern networked warfare, enabling seamless data exchange between aircraft, ground stations, and other platforms while withstanding cyber and electronic threats.
Key technical priorities include:
- Developing advanced encryption protocols and secure networking algorithms.
- Ensuring resilient data transmission in high-threat scenarios.
- Building scalable networks for airborne operations.
- Achieving seamless integration with existing IAF systems.
The project is expected to produce deployable prototypes that will enhance operational efficiency, strengthen airborne forces, and contribute to India’s growing defence industrial base.
Air Vice Marshal R Guruhari described the partnership as “a visionary step towards achieving complete self-reliance in critical defence communication technologies.” He emphasised that combining IIT Madras’ academic excellence with the IAF’s operational expertise will deliver innovative indigenous solutions, significantly boosting capabilities and contributing to a stronger Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Prof V Kamakoti echoed this sentiment, stating that the collaboration exemplifies the powerful synergy between academia and defence institutions. “IIT Madras is proud to contribute its expertise in advanced communication technologies and cybersecurity to create robust, indigenous solutions,” he said. “This initiative aligns perfectly with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, empowering our nation with cutting-edge, homegrown technologies that strengthen national security.”
This effort builds on IIT Madras’ extensive involvement in defence research, including ongoing work in aerospace, artificial intelligence, and materials science. By prioritising indigenisation, the partnership not only addresses immediate operational needs but also reinforces India’s strategic autonomy in an era of rapidly evolving aerial threats.
As India continues to modernise its armed forces, initiatives like this underscore a clear shift: no more reliance on foreign tech for core defence capabilities. The IAF-IIT Madras alliance is coding a future where India’s defence sovereignty is firmly in Indian hands.
