Mendipathar: Meghalaya’s First and Only Railway Station

Mendipathar Railway Station, located in the North Garo Hills district of Meghalaya near Resubelpara, holds the distinction of being the state’s first and, as of January 2026, only operational railway station. With the station code MNDP, it serves as a terminal on the Dudhnoi–Mendipathar broad-gauge line, providing the long-isolated hill state with its vital connection to Assam and the rest of India’s vast railway network.

Meghalaya’s entry into the Indian Railways map was a long and challenging journey. Despite being one of the last states to receive rail connectivity, the groundwork for the Dudhnoi–Mendipathar line was laid years earlier. Initially planned routes faced significant hurdles, including land acquisition difficulties and local opposition in other parts of the state. In 2007, the alignment was shifted to the current Dudhnoi–Mendipathar section to overcome these obstacles.

The breakthrough came in November 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated passenger services on the line, flagging off the first train from Mendipathar. This historic event marked the end of Meghalaya’s decades-long wait for rail connectivity and was celebrated as a major milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.

For years, the station primarily handled passenger trains linking the Garo Hills region with Guwahati and other parts of Assam. However, freight operations remained limited until recently. In February 2025, the station received its first freight unloading with the arrival of food grains. This was followed by a significant development in December 2025, when the first full freight train loaded with coal was dispatched from Mendipathar, further enhancing the station’s role in supporting local trade and economy.

While several other railway projects in Meghalaya—such as the proposed Tetelia–Byrnihat line and extensions toward Shillong and Jowai—have been announced over the years, progress has been slow. Persistent issues related to land acquisition, environmental concerns, and local resistance have delayed these initiatives. As a result, Mendipathar continues to stand alone as the sole functional railway station in the state.

For the people of Meghalaya, particularly in the Garo Hills, Mendipathar Railway Station represents more than just a transport hub—it symbolizes improved accessibility, economic opportunities, and greater integration with the rest of the country. Though modest in scale, it remains a landmark achievement in the state’s ongoing quest for modern infrastructure.
