Manchester United Turn to Club Legends for Interim Managerial Role After Amorim Sacking
Manchester United have held discussions with former managers and players Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Michael Carrick, and Darren Fletcher regarding a potential interim role following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
Amorim was sacked on January 5, 2026, after a challenging 14-month spell at Old Trafford characterised by tactical disagreements, frustrations over transfers, and disappointing results. The Portuguese coach’s departure marked the latest chapter in a turbulent period for the club.
In the immediate aftermath, under-18s coach and former midfielder Darren Fletcher was appointed as caretaker manager. Fletcher, a long-serving figure at United both as a player and in coaching roles, will take charge of upcoming fixtures, including the Premier League clash away at Burnley and the FA Cup tie against Brighton.
However, the club is actively exploring options for a longer-term interim appointment to see out the remainder of the 2025-26 season, with a permanent managerial hire planned for the summer of 2026.
Leading the shortlist is Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the club legend who previously enjoyed a successful interim stint in 2018-19 before being handed the role permanently until his dismissal in 2021. Solskjær has been out of management since parting ways with Besiktas and is understood to have held positive informal talks with United officials.
Michael Carrick, who briefly served as caretaker manager in 2021 and later managed Middlesbrough, has also been approached. Carrick is currently available after leaving his role at the Championship club.
Fletcher himself has been spoken to about potentially extending his involvement beyond the immediate caretaker duties.
Other names linked to the role include Ruud van Nistelrooy, who acted as interim manager in 2024, though his candidacy appears less prominent at this stage.
The discussions, described as early-stage and informal, are being led by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. Sources indicate a preference for a familiar face capable of stabilising the squad and restoring morale during a difficult mid-table campaign.
Solskjær’s prior experience and status as a club icon make him a particularly appealing option, though United are keen to avoid repeating past patterns where successful interim managers were promoted permanently without a broader search.
As of January 7, 2026, no final decision has been reached, with face-to-face meetings expected in the coming days. The appointment of an interim figure is seen as a low-risk measure to bridge the gap until a major overhaul in the summer.
