United Breweries Launches Kingfisher Smooth: A New Strong Beer Tailored for Next-Generation Consumers

Bengaluru-based United Breweries Limited (UBL), a subsidiary of the global brewing giant Heineken, has introduced Kingfisher Smooth, a fresh addition to its iconic Kingfisher portfolio. Announced on January 7, 2026, this strategic innovation targets the mainstream strong beer segment in India, which continues to dominate overall beer consumption in the country.

Kingfisher Smooth is specifically designed for younger legal-age consumers who appreciate the strength of traditional strong beers but seek a more approachable, balanced, and sessionable drinking experience. The new variant promises reduced bitterness and a smoother finish, making it easier to enjoy over extended occasions without the harsh aftertaste often associated with stronger options.

The beer is brewed using premium imported hops and contains no added sugar, resulting in a clean, balanced taste that retains the expected potency of a strong beer. While the classic Kingfisher Strong remains the benchmark for a full-bodied, robust profile, Kingfisher Smooth expands the flagship brand’s offerings, underscoring UBL’s focus on consumer-centric innovation and category evolution.

The launch follows extensive research and consumer testing conducted over the past 18 months. Company executives highlighted shifting preferences among drinkers, particularly the demand for strong yet smoother beers that align with modern, diversified consumption patterns.

Vivek Gupta, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of United Breweries, described the product as a “first-ever game-changing innovation” in the mainstream strong beer segment. He emphasized Kingfisher’s historical role in shaping India’s beer category and its position as a key recruiter of new consumers. With approximately 23 million individuals entering the legal drinking age annually in India, many of whom are open to experimenting with beer as their entry point into alcoholic beverages, Gupta sees Kingfisher Smooth as a vital tool for attracting this demographic and driving broader category growth.

Vikram Bahl, Chief Marketing Officer, added that the development was informed by insights showing consumers seeking more sessionable options without compromising on strength or familiar taste. The product has been crafted to meet these evolving needs.

Kingfisher Smooth has made its debut in Rajasthan, recognized as one of India’s largest strong beer-consuming states. It is now available at leading retail outlets in the region, with the following introductory pricing:

  • ₹100 for a 330 ml bottle
  • ₹145 for a 500 ml can
  • ₹185 for a 650 ml bottle

The company plans a phased pan-India rollout over the next 12–18 months, aiming to capitalize on the strong beer segment’s dominance and contribute to overall beer category recovery.

Looking ahead, UBL remains optimistic about the industry’s prospects. After a slower period influenced by factors such as heavy rainfall and affordability challenges in 2025, the company anticipates the beer category to rebound with 5–6% growth in 2026, supported by innovation, improved availability, and favorable taxation policies. Premium segments have already shown resilience, posting over 20% growth in calendar year 2025, with momentum expected to carry forward.

This launch reinforces United Breweries’ commitment to premiumisation and product diversification within the Kingfisher family, positioning the brand to lead growth in a dynamic and competitive market. As Indian consumers continue to explore more refined drinking experiences, Kingfisher Smooth represents a timely step toward bridging tradition with contemporary preferences. 🍺
