HCLTech Announces Significant Salary Hike for Elite Freshers, Offering Up to Rs 22 Lakh Per Annum

In a move aimed at attracting top talent in high-demand technology areas, HCLTech, India’s third-largest IT services company, has substantially increased entry-level compensation for a select group of fresh engineering graduates. The announcement came during the company’s Q3 FY26 earnings conference call on January 12, 2026.

Ram Sundararajan, Chief People Officer at HCLTech, revealed that the company is now offering packages ranging from Rs 18 lakh to Rs 22 lakh per annum for its internally designated “elite cadre” of engineers. This represents 3X to 4X higher pay compared to the company’s standard fresher hires.

These elite freshers are targeted for specialized roles in emerging and critical fields, including:

  • Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Digital engineering
  • Cybersecurity
  • Enterprise skills

Sundararajan emphasized the need to remain competitive in the talent market, stating, “We have to be competitive to be able to attract the best of talents that we want for our elite cadre.” He noted that this differentiated approach was first discussed two quarters earlier, with the elite group expected to comprise approximately 15-20% of the overall fresher hiring. The strategy prioritizes quality and specialization over sheer volume, aligning with the company’s broader shift toward hiring for advanced skills amid the AI boom.

This comes as HCLTech ramps up its fresher intake significantly. The company has already added a substantial number of freshers in FY26, with total additions far exceeding the previous year’s figures (around 7,000 in FY25). Despite a marginal headcount dip in Q3 due to attrition and rationalization, the focus on elite talent underscores the industry’s push to build capabilities in next-generation technologies.

The hike follows a similar trend set by rival Infosys, which in late December 2025 announced entry-level packages of up to Rs 21 lakh per annum for specialized technology roles, such as Specialist Programmer positions. This reflects growing competition among Indian IT majors to secure skilled graduates in AI, digital, and related domains, where demand far outstrips supply.

For context, standard fresher packages at major IT firms like HCLTech typically range from Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 6-7 lakh per annum for general roles, depending on the program, location, and other factors. The introduction of these premium “elite” tracks marks a clear differentiation, rewarding specialized expertise from day one.

This development signals a positive shift for engineering graduates with strong backgrounds in high-growth areas. Aspiring candidates, particularly from 2025 and 2026 batches in computer science, IT, and related fields, should monitor HCLTech’s campus and off-campus recruitment drives for opportunities in these elite programs.

As the IT sector continues to evolve with AI and digital transformation at its core, such targeted compensation strategies are likely to become the new norm, helping companies like HCLTech build future-ready workforces while addressing talent shortages in premium skill sets.
