India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is poised to make its debut in Japan, representing a significant milestone in the global expansion of the country’s highly successful real-time digital payments system.
The initiative stems from a strategic partnership between Japan’s leading IT services provider, NTT Data, and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in October 2025 to establish the groundwork for UPI acceptance at merchant locations across Japan.
Trial Rollout Planned for Fiscal 2026
The rollout will begin on a trial basis during Japan’s fiscal year 2026 (starting April 2026). In its initial phase, the service will primarily cater to Indian tourists visiting Japan, a demographic that has seen substantial growth in recent years, with annual visitor numbers exceeding 200,000.
Indian travelers will be able to use their existing UPI-enabled mobile apps—such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and others—to scan QR codes at participating merchants. Payments will be processed in real time, with funds debited directly from the user’s Indian bank account. This eliminates the need for local payment cards, currency conversion, or separate digital wallets, offering a seamless, low-cost, and secure experience familiar to users back home.
Broader Implications and Future Potential
While the launch focuses on supporting inbound tourism from India, the collaboration opens the door to deeper integration between Indian and Japanese payment ecosystems. NTT Data and NPCI are exploring possibilities for linking the two countries’ payment networks more comprehensively, which could eventually facilitate cross-border transactions for residents, businesses, and trade.
This move aligns with Japan’s ongoing efforts to promote cashless payments and digital adoption, while showcasing India’s fintech innovation on an international stage. Japan marks UPI’s first major entry into East Asia, expanding its footprint beyond existing markets.
UPI’s Growing Global Presence
UPI has already achieved notable success internationally. It is currently operational or in advanced stages in several countries, including:
- Bhutan (the first international adopter)
- Singapore
- Nepal
- United Arab Emirates (UAE)
- Sri Lanka
- Qatar
- Mauritius
- France
With Japan’s upcoming trial, UPI continues to demonstrate the scalability and appeal of India’s interoperable, real-time payment model. The system’s emphasis on simplicity, speed, and affordability has made it a global benchmark for digital financial inclusion.
This development underscores the rising influence of Digital India and highlights how homegrown innovations can reshape cross-border finance. As UPI extends its reach to new geographies, it strengthens economic ties and enhances convenience for travelers and businesses alike between India and its international partners. 🇮🇳🇯🇵
