Meghalaya Opts Against Dedicated Games Village for 2027 National Games, Relies on Existing Accommodations
Shillong, January 31, 2026 – Meghalaya is advancing steadily in its preparations to host the 39th National Games in 2027, with Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla confirming that the state will not construct a dedicated Games Village. Instead, the government plans to utilize the abundant existing hotel and homestay facilities available across key areas to house athletes, officials, and participants.
Speaking to reporters following a high-level review meeting on January 30, Minister Shylla emphasized that preparations for the multi-sport event are firmly on track. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar (who oversees urban affairs), included detailed presentations on sports infrastructure, accommodation logistics, and overall planning. Shylla described the updates as satisfactory, noting that the Deputy Chief Minister expressed appreciation for the progress shown.
A key highlight of the announcement is the decision to forgo a centralized Games Village—a traditional feature in many previous National Games editions that typically involves building temporary housing complexes. Shylla explained that Meghalaya’s tourism infrastructure, including numerous hotels and homestays in Shillong, the Garo Hills, and Jaintia Hills regions, provides sufficient capacity and quality to meet the needs of the event without additional construction. This approach is expected to promote sustainability, support local businesses, and align with the state’s emphasis on leveraging existing resources.
Infrastructure development remains a priority and is progressing well. Major venues such as the Jawaharlal Nehru (JN) Sports Complex in Shillong and the P.A. Sangma Stadium in Tura (West Garo Hills) are nearing completion or advancing on schedule. Shylla has personally inspected several sites, including in the Garo Hills, and expressed confidence in their readiness.
The state has also sought financial assistance from the central government, requesting ₹100 crore to bolster preparations, including venue enhancements, logistics, and related infrastructure like road improvements. The Meghalaya government has committed to covering the full expenditure for hosting the Games, though overall cost estimates are still preliminary.
Recent review meetings, including coordinated efforts across multiple departments, underscore the collaborative push to ensure a successful event. While some events may involve co-hosting with other Northeastern states—as encouraged by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports—the core hosting responsibility rests with Meghalaya.
With these updates, the state aims to deliver a memorable and efficient National Games that showcases its sporting facilities and hospitality while minimizing unnecessary new developments. Preparations continue to move forward, with officials optimistic about meeting all timelines for the 2027 edition.
