Spotify Rolls Out Inline Lyrics on the Now Playing Screen for Easier Sing-Alongs

Spotify has introduced a convenient update that brings real-time, synced lyrics directly into the main Now Playing interface on its mobile app, allowing users to follow along with song words at a glance without extra steps.

The change, rolled out as a server-side update around late January 2026, places the current lyric line prominently under the album artwork on the playback screen. As the track progresses, the displayed line updates automatically in sync with the music, creating a seamless karaoke-like experience right in the primary player view. This builds on Spotify’s existing lyrics feature, which has been available to both free and Premium users for years through partnerships like Musixmatch.

Previously, users had to swipe up or tap into a dedicated lyrics panel to view the words—often requiring a pull-down gesture or separate access. The new inline display reduces that friction, making it ideal for quick glances during commutes, workouts, or casual listening sessions.

Key Features of the Update

  • Inline Lyrics Display: The active line appears just below the album cover, updating line-by-line in real time.
  • Toggle Control: Users who prefer the traditional clean layout without lyrics can disable the feature easily. On the Now Playing screen, tap the three-dot menu (⋮ on Android or … on iOS), and select the “Lyrics” option to turn the preview off or on. This setting applies globally to all tracks with available lyrics.
  • Full Lyrics Access Retained: For those wanting to see upcoming lines, the complete scrollable lyrics view remains accessible by swiping up or navigating to the dedicated panel.
  • Broad Availability: The feature works on both iOS and Android mobile apps. Lyrics availability depends on licensing agreements, so not every song includes them, but coverage continues to expand.

The rollout appears gradual, with reports first surfacing on platforms like Reddit before gaining wider attention from tech outlets such as Android Authority and GSMArena. Since it’s server-side, no app update is needed—eligible users simply see the change appear in their app.

This tweak aligns with Spotify’s ongoing efforts to enhance user engagement with music, especially for sing-along enthusiasts. By making lyrics more immediately visible, the platform aims to deepen connections between listeners and their favorite tracks.

If you’re a Spotify user, check your Now Playing screen during playback to see if the update has reached your account yet.
