A Smarter Way to Invest: The Hybrid Strategy That May Outperform Traditional SIPs

In the world of mutual fund investing, Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) have long been hailed as the go-to method for building wealth steadily and without the stress of timing the market. The popular narrative is simple: invest a fixed amount monthly, benefit from rupee-cost averaging, and let compounding do the magic over the long term. Many dream of turning a modest ₹10,000 monthly SIP into ₹1 crore or more. Yet, reality often tells a different story.

Recent insights from Zerodha’s educational platform, Zero1, highlight a sobering truth: most people don’t stick with SIPs long enough for the strategy to work its full potential. Data referenced from SEBI consultation papers reveals that around 73% of investors discontinue their SIPs within the first two years, and an astonishing 97% stop by the fifth year. Only about 3% remain invested consistently. Discontinuations outnumber new SIP starts by roughly four times, often triggered by market volatility, fear during downturns, life events, or simply a lack of discipline.

This high dropout rate undermines the core promise of SIPs. When markets fall, many investors pause or stop contributions precisely when buying more units at lower prices would be most advantageous. In bull markets, lumpsum investments tend to outperform SIPs because money deployed early captures more upside. In volatile or sideways markets, however, SIPs shine through disciplined averaging. The challenge lies in bridging these realities.

Enter a practical hybrid approach that builds on the strengths of SIPs while incorporating opportunistic lumpsum additions. The strategy starts with a solid foundation: maintain a regular SIP (or better yet, a step-up SIP where the monthly amount increases annually, say by 10%, to align with rising income). Then, add extra investments during market corrections using predefined triggers, such as Nifty index drops.

For instance:

  • If the Nifty falls by 2%, invest an additional lumpsum equal to 3 times your regular monthly SIP amount.
  • For a 5% drop, consider adding 6 times the SIP amount as lumpsum.

This “buy more on dips” twist allows you to accumulate extra units at cheaper valuations without abandoning the discipline of regular investing. Backtested over a 10-year period from January 2014 to January 2025 using Nifty 50 data, the results are compelling:

  • A plain ₹10,000 monthly SIP delivered around 12.64% XIRR.
  • A step-up SIP (10% annual increase) improved it slightly to 12.83%.
  • Adding lumpsum during falls boosted the hybrid to about 13.07%.
  • Combining step-up with the lumpsum-on-dips rule pushed returns to approximately 13.3%.

These figures come from Zerodha’s analysis and are shared transparently with a free Google Sheets calculator that lets investors input their own assumptions, track Nifty levels, simulate investments, and compute XIRR comparisons across strategies.

Importantly, the video doesn’t present this as a foolproof “secret” guaranteed to beat the market forever. Backtests rely on historical data—events like the 2008 crash or post-COVID recoveries won’t repeat exactly, and future performance is inherently uncertain. The approach assumes you have an emergency fund in place, disposable cash available during downturns (a real hurdle for many middle-class investors), and the discipline to continue regardless of short-term noise.

At its core, the message shifts from chasing maximum returns to something more sustainable: investing should primarily make you feel secure and build a lifelong habit. Money’s true role is to provide peace of mind, not endless worry or regret over missed opportunities. Returns often follow consistency more than clever timing.

Whether you’re a beginner dreaming of that ₹1 crore corpus or a seasoned investor reviewing your approach, the hybrid strategy offers a grounded middle path. Start with steady SIPs, step up as your income grows, and thoughtfully add more when markets offer discounts—always prioritizing financial safety over perfection. In the long run, staying invested matters far more than any single trick.
