U.S. Marines Seek Advanced Thermal Camouflage Cloaks to Evade Modern Sensors

The U.S. Marine Corps is actively pursuing innovative technology to counter the growing threat of thermal-imaging sensors on the modern battlefield. Through Marine Corps Systems Command, the service has issued a Sources Sought notice for the development of a Multispectral Camouflage Overgarment (MCO) — essentially a full-body cloak designed to conceal Marines from detection across multiple spectrums, including thermal imaging.
This initiative draws heavily from lessons observed in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where inexpensive drones equipped with thermal cameras have dramatically changed the dynamics of concealment. Traditional visual camouflage, while effective against the naked eye or basic optics, often fails against infrared sensors that detect body heat, making troops and positions highly visible even when hidden in foliage or terrain.
The proposed MCO is described as a single-piece, generously sized draped garment — similar to a large poncho — capable of providing full-body coverage, including over personal gear and equipment. It is not intended for routine garrison use but rather for training exercises and operational deployments where signature management is critical.
Key performance requirements focus on multispectral concealment:
- Mitigation of detection in the visual (VIS), near-infrared (NIR), and short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands to counter daytime optics, night-vision devices, and similar sensors.
- Suppression of thermal signatures in the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) bands to reduce visibility to thermal-imaging systems.
Specific goals include extended nondetection ranges, such as avoiding visual detection from ground-based sensors at over 600 meters and providing thermal masking at distances up to several kilometers against certain aerial sensors (with minimum performance targets like 5,000 meters against MWIR aerial threats in some scenarios, and ideal closer-range effectiveness).
The Marine Corps envisions the MCO as the primary individual signature management solution for Marines, with ambitious procurement targets: approximately 13,000 units by 2027 and scaling to 61,000 by 2030. This quantity suggests the potential to equip a substantial portion of deployable forces.
The Sources Sought notice, released in March 2026, invites industry vendors to demonstrate capabilities for developing this garment. Responses are due by April 22, 2026, marking the early market research and potential future procurement phase. While not promising true invisibility in the sci-fi sense, the technology aims to significantly degrade the effectiveness of pervasive drone-based and sensor-driven surveillance.
This effort reflects broader U.S. military adaptation to evolving threats, where low-cost, widespread thermal detection has eroded traditional stealth advantages. By investing in advanced multispectral materials and designs, the Marine Corps seeks to restore concealment capabilities in high-threat environments dominated by persistent aerial observation.
