Resident Evil Requiem Debuts as the Best-Selling Game of the Year in the U.S. So Far

Capcom’s latest survival horror entry has made a powerful impact on the U.S. video game market. According to Circana (formerly NPD) sales data, Resident Evil Requiem — widely referred to as the ninth mainline installment in the long-running series — topped the premium games chart for February 2026 and claimed the title of best-selling game of the year to date in the United States.

The game launched on February 27, 2026, giving it only a few days of sales within the month. Despite the limited window, it dominated the rankings across most platforms, securing the No. 1 spot on PlayStation, Xbox, and aggregated PC charts. On Nintendo platforms (including the Switch 2), it performed strongly but was outsold by titles such as Mario Tennis Fever.

Strong Launch Performance

Resident Evil Requiem has proven to be a commercial success from the outset. Capcom announced that the title surpassed 5 million units sold worldwide within its first week and later crossed the 6 million mark shortly after launch. This makes it the fastest-selling game in the Resident Evil series history.

Launch-week dollar sales in the U.S. were more than 60% higher than those of Resident Evil Village (RE8), with unit sales increasing by over 40%. The game also benefited from a “Resident Evil Generation Pack” that bundles earlier titles (including RE7 and Village), which performed particularly well on Nintendo hardware.

February 2026 U.S. Sales Highlights

Circana’s data shows the following top sellers for the month (partial rankings based on available reports):

  1. Resident Evil Requiem (Capcom) — New
  2. NBA 2K26
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7

Other notable new releases, including Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined and God of War: Sons of Sparta, also appeared on the chart. Overall U.S. consumer spending on video games in February reached approximately $4.6 billion, a slight year-over-year increase. The PlayStation 5 remained the best-selling console for the second consecutive month, followed by the Nintendo Switch 2.

Critical Reception and Future Outlook

Resident Evil Requiem has been well received by critics, earning a Metascore of around 89 on Metacritic, with praise for its refined survival horror gameplay, atmosphere, and narrative advancements. User scores have also been highly positive.

While Requiem currently leads the 2026 year-to-date charts, the year is still young. Major upcoming releases, including highly anticipated titles like Grand Theft Auto VI, are expected to challenge its position later in the year. Nevertheless, its explosive debut positions it as an early frontrunner and a strong performer for Capcom.

Data is drawn from Circana’s tracking, which covers physical sales and digital sales on most platforms (Nintendo digital sales are not included, meaning Switch 2 performance may be understated). Reports come from industry analysts such as Mat Piscatella, along with coverage by IGN, Wccftech, Insider Gaming, and official Capcom announcements.
