Rajpal Yadav Refuses to Settle ₹9 Crore Debt Case, Opts to Argue on Merits in Court

New Delhi, March 2026 — In a significant development in the long-running ₹9 crore cheque bounce and debt dispute, Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has decided against an out-of-court settlement. Instead, he wants to contest the case legally and argue it on its merits before the court.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday extended the actor’s interim bail till April 1, 2026. During the hearing, the court inquired about Rajpal Yadav’s willingness to settle the matter, noting that he had already made substantial payments towards the dues. However, the actor’s lawyer, SK Sharma, later told the media that his client is firm on fighting the case.

“To Rajpal ji ne kaha ke ab settle nahi karna chahte, argument karne hai,” Sharma said, quoting the actor. He added that an application has been filed and arguments will be heard on the next date of hearing, April 1.

Background of the 14-Year-Old Dispute

The case dates back to around 2010–2012 when Rajpal Yadav borrowed approximately ₹5 crore from Delhi businessman Madhav Gopal Agarwal (representing M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd) to finance his directorial debut film Ata Pata Laapata. The movie failed at the box office, leading to delays in repayment.

With accumulated interest, penalties, and legal costs under the Negotiable Instruments Act, the outstanding amount reportedly rose to nearly ₹9 crore. Rajpal has previously described the dispute as an “ego clash” or a “ghar ka maamla” (family matter), claiming it stemmed from a verbal agreement based on trust rather than a formal loan.

The actor has spent time in Tihar Jail in connection with the case, including a recent stint in February 2026 before being granted interim relief. According to his legal team, he has so far paid around ₹2.5 crore in instalments, including recent deposits via demand drafts and direct bank transfers.

Recent Court Proceedings

In earlier hearings, the Delhi High Court had suspended Rajpal Yadav’s sentence on an interim basis after he deposited significant amounts and cited personal reasons, such as attending a family wedding. On Wednesday, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma declined to vacate the interim protection despite the complainant’s plea, while extending the bail relief until the next hearing.

The court has indicated it will endeavour to decide the matter finally on April 1, 2026. Rajpal Yadav’s side maintains full faith in the judicial system and is prepared to present arguments on the merits of the case, including the nature of the original transaction.

The development comes amid widespread media attention, with the actor having spoken publicly about the emotional and professional toll of the prolonged legal battle. The complainant, meanwhile, has maintained that the amount was a clear loan that remains largely unpaid despite multiple assurances.

The case continues to highlight the complexities of financial disputes involving celebrities, verbal agreements, and the stringent provisions of cheque bounce laws in India. Further updates are expected on April 1 when the Delhi High Court hears detailed arguments.
