Shillong, April 25, 2026 — In a significant boost to air connectivity in Meghalaya, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has awarded the tender for the long-awaited expansion of Shillong Airport (Umroi/Barapani Airport). Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar announced the development, stating that the contractor is expected to commence work shortly.
The project, which includes critical airside works, has been awarded to KCC Buildcon Pvt. Ltd. The company received the Letter of Award (LoA) on April 1, 2026, for approximately ₹82.37 crore related to runway expansion and allied infrastructure.
Project Scope and Timeline
The expansion envisages extending the existing runway by about 571 metres to reach a total length of approximately 2,400 metres. This upgrade will enable the airport to handle larger and wide-bodied aircraft. Other key components include:
- Expansion of the terminal building
- Apron expansion
- Additional parking bays
- Other allied civil and infrastructure works
The contractor has been given 18 months for completion, including a 3-month allowance for the monsoon season. The timeline will be counted from the 10th day after issuance of the work order. Preparatory activities at the site are expected to begin soon under the supervision of AAI engineers.
Environmental and Land Clearances
The project received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on March 28, 2026. This green nod was a crucial milestone that paved the way for the final award of the contract. Land acquisition hurdles, including the handover of over 21 acres, have also been largely resolved, with the Meghalaya government facilitating the process.
Boost to Regional Connectivity and Tourism
The expansion of Shillong Airport has been a long-standing demand from the people of Meghalaya. Once completed, the upgraded facility is expected to significantly improve air services, attract more flights, and enhance tourism potential in the state. Better connectivity will benefit both residents and visitors to the scenic hill state.
Deputy Chief Minister Dhar has directed officials from the Transport Department to maintain close coordination with AAI, obtain detailed project information, and ensure smooth execution of the work.
This development marks a major step forward for infrastructure in Northeast India and is anticipated to play a transformative role in the economic growth of Meghalaya. Further updates on the project’s progress will be monitored closely by state authorities and aviation enthusiasts alike.
