GSU Vows Tit-for-Tat Action Against Assam After AAMSU Protests in Garo Hills

Guwahati/Shillong, April 25, 2026 – The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has issued a strong warning of reciprocal measures against Assam in response to protests and proposed economic sanctions by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) targeting communities in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills.

In a recent press release, the GSU sharply criticised the AAMSU for depicting Meghalaya as a region of “torture” for Assamese labourers and small businessmen. The Garo students’ body argued that such portrayals overlook longstanding grievances, including unchecked influx of outsiders, exploitation of local resources, and economic domination in the Garo Hills and other parts of Meghalaya.

The GSU stated that it would initiate “strong and proportionate” countermeasures despite Meghalaya’s heavy reliance on Assam for road connectivity to the rest of India. A key target mentioned is the Mankachar-Guwahati road, which passes through Garo Hills at Phulbari. The union indicated that disruptions along this vital route could be part of its response strategy.

This escalation stems from ongoing tensions between student and pressure groups in Meghalaya and Assam. Issues at the heart of the dispute include migration, border management, economic activities by non-locals, and the protection of indigenous and tribal interests in the sensitive Northeast region. Similar confrontations in the past have led to transport blockades, protests by taxi associations, and temporary restrictions along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

As of now, no specific timeline for the GSU’s planned actions has been announced, and the situation remains fluid. Local authorities in both states are expected to monitor developments closely to prevent any disruption to normal movement and trade in the border areas.

The episode highlights the complex socio-economic and ethnic dynamics that frequently surface in India’s Northeast, where student unions often play an active role in advocating for local rights and resources. Further updates are awaited as both sides dig in.
