Guwahati, April 2026: In a significant step towards easing chronic traffic congestion, the busy Khanapara junction in Guwahati is all set for a comprehensive redesign as part of the ambitious Guwahati Ring Road Project.
The redevelopment will focus on reworking road geometry, improving junctions, and creating smoother traffic flow. Plans include dedicated lanes, revised alignments, enhanced pedestrian infrastructure, and better integration with public transport. Additional features such as landscaping, improved stormwater drainage, and urban heat mitigation measures are also part of the upgrade. Authorities have emphasised efforts to preserve existing trees wherever possible while prioritising road safety and multimodal connectivity.
Guwahati Ring Road Project: An Overview
The Khanapara redesign is a key component of the larger 121-km Guwahati Ring Road Project, estimated to cost around ₹5,729 crore and being developed on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis. The project aims to provide an efficient bypass for long-distance traffic, thereby decongesting the city core.
Major elements of the project include:
- A 56-km Northern Guwahati Bypass (4-lane, access-controlled, greenfield alignment from Baihata Chariali to Sonapur via Kuruwa and Chandrapur, featuring a major bridge over the Brahmaputra).
- Widening of approximately 8 km on NH-27 from Khanapara to Sonapur/Jorabat from 4 lanes to 6 lanes.
- Upgradation of the existing 58-km bypass sections.
Construction activities commenced in early 2026, with the project targeting substantial completion between 2027 and 2030.
Expected Benefits and Local Impact
Once completed, the Khanapara redesign is expected to significantly reduce bottlenecks at this critical junction, improve connectivity towards Jorabat and beyond, and support better public transport integration. Residents and commuters can look forward to safer roads and more efficient travel, especially as Guwahati continues its rapid urban growth.
However, the construction phase is likely to bring temporary disruptions, including traffic diversions and potential impacts on local businesses. Officials have assured that mitigation measures and grievance redressal mechanisms will be put in place to minimise inconvenience.
Challenges Ahead
The broader ring road initiative has drawn attention over environmental concerns, including potential effects on wetlands, tree felling in the Khanapara–Sonapur stretch, and wildlife habitats in areas like Amchang. Some local communities have also expressed apprehensions regarding displacement and livelihood impacts.
Despite these challenges, the project represents a long-term investment in Guwahati’s urban mobility infrastructure. Authorities are expected to conduct local consultations and issue regular traffic advisories as work progresses.
This redevelopment at Khanapara marks an important milestone in transforming Guwahati into a more organised and commuter-friendly city. Updates on the project will be keenly watched by residents in the coming months.
