Harbhajan Singh Challenges AAP-led Punjab Government’s Security Withdrawal in High Court

Chandigarh, May 2, 2026: Rajya Sabha MP and former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, challenging the AAP-led Punjab government’s decision to withdraw his security cover shortly after he switched allegiance from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Singh, who along with six other AAP Rajya Sabha MPs joined the BJP on April 24, 2026, saw his Y-category security — provided by the state police since a 2022 threat assessment — abruptly withdrawn on April 25. The move, which involved the removal of 9 to 25 personnel depending on various reports, has been described by the petitioner as arbitrary, lacking any fresh threat evaluation or prior notice, and politically motivated.

In his petition, Singh has sought immediate restoration of the security cover and questioned the basis for its withdrawal. He also urged the court to direct action against a mob that allegedly attacked his residence in Jalandhar soon after the security was removed. The protesters reportedly vandalized property and defaced the walls with the word “gaddar” (traitor), with claims that police personnel present failed to intervene effectively.

The High Court, while hearing the urgent plea, issued notices to both the Punjab state government and the Centre. It directed the Punjab government to ensure the safety of Harbhajan Singh and his family members while they are in the state, emphasizing that no physical harm should come to them. The court has sought a detailed response on the threat perception assessment that led to the withdrawal and has scheduled the next hearing for May 12.

Following the state’s decision, the Central government deputed CRPF personnel to provide security to Singh in Punjab and Delhi. However, the petition maintains that the Punjab government remains duty-bound to extend adequate protection given the prevailing law and order situation and perceived threats.

The development has sparked political controversy, with the case drawing attention to issues of security for public figures amid party defections. The Punjab government has reportedly indicated in related submissions that Singh does not primarily reside in the state.

This legal battle comes at a time of heightened political flux in Punjab, as the AAP administration faces criticism from opposition parties over its handling of security and law and order matters. The outcome of the petition is expected to have implications for similar cases involving political figures who have changed parties.
