The Armored BMW King Charles Flew In For His US Visit

During King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s state visit to the United States in late April 2026, one vehicle stood out in the royal motorcade: a heavily armored BMW 760i xDrive Protection. The jet-black luxury sedan, complete with European license plates, was not sourced locally but flown directly from Europe to ensure the highest level of security and familiarity for the royal couple.

The visit, which included stops in Washington DC and meetings with President Donald Trump, marked America’s 250th anniversary. For such high-profile international trips, it is standard protocol for heads of state to transport their own vetted, purpose-built secure vehicles rather than relying solely on host-nation transport.

Built for Maximum Protection

The vehicle in question is a BMW 760i xDrive Protection VR9 from the G73 7 Series generation. Unlike aftermarket conversions, this model is armored from the ground up at BMW’s Dingolfing plant using a specialized “Protection Core” structure. It holds the highest civilian ballistic protection rating (VR9), capable of stopping armor-piercing 7.62×51mm NATO rounds. The glass meets VPAM 10 standards, resisting even powerful 7.62×54R sniper ammunition. The underbody and roof are engineered to withstand multiple hand-grenade detonations.

Weighing approximately 3,965 kg (8,740 lbs)—roughly a ton heavier than a standard 7 Series—the armored BMW maintains respectable performance thanks to its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 mild-hybrid powertrain. It produces 530 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in about 6.6 seconds with a governed top speed of 210 km/h. Features include run-flat tires, heavy-duty doors with “Effortless Door” assistance, an intercom system, and a hold-up alarm. Optional equipment can include an onboard oxygen supply for chemical or gas attacks and emergency escape mechanisms.

King Charles has also been seen using the electric counterpart, the armored BMW i7 M70 xDrive Protection, which weighs even more at around 4,900 kg. This aligns with his well-known environmental advocacy. However, for this particular US visit, the combustion-engined 760i Protection was the primary vehicle deployed.

A Standout in the Motorcade

Car enthusiasts and Washington DC spotters quickly noticed the distinctive Euro-spec armored 7 Series among the American escort vehicles. Its absence of typical US amber side markers and its purposeful, low-profile armored design made it easily identifiable. The same vehicle was later observed continuing royal duties in Bermuda after the US leg of the trip.

Transporting specialized protection vehicles across the Atlantic is a common practice for royal and VIP travel, prioritizing trusted security configurations over local alternatives. The BMW’s appearance once again highlighted the careful balance between royal tradition, modern luxury, and stringent security requirements in today’s geopolitical climate.
