Raghav Chadha: The Prodigy Who Walked Away

Raghav Chadha, the youngest-ever Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, has long been seen as one of Indian politics’ brightest young talents. A chartered accountant by training and a polished orator by choice, Chadha rose rapidly through the ranks of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) before making a dramatic exit in April 2026, quitting the party along with six other Rajya Sabha MPs to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His departure, marked by public accusations of a “toxic work culture,” has drawn both sharp criticism and intense scrutiny.

A Non-Political Prodigy Enters the Arena

Born on November 11, 1988, in Central Delhi to a middle-class family, Chadha did not come from a political dynasty. His father, Sunil Chadha, is a lawyer, and his mother, Alka Chadha, a homemaker. He studied at the prestigious Modern School on Barakhamba Road and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Delhi in 2009. By age 22, he had qualified as a Chartered Accountant, later working with leading firms such as Deloitte and Grant Thornton. He also pursued a certification in public policy from the London School of Economics.

Chadha’s entry into politics came during the India Against Corruption movement in 2011–12, when he was just in his early twenties. Encouraged by Arvind Kejriwal, he helped draft the Delhi Lokpal Bill and quickly became one of AAP’s most visible young faces. Known for his articulate television appearances and sharp debating skills, he was appointed national treasurer of the party at the age of 26 following AAP’s sweeping victory in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections.

Rise Within AAP: From MLA to Youngest Rajya Sabha MP

Chadha’s political ascent was swift. In 2020, he won the Rajinder Nagar seat in the Delhi Assembly with a convincing margin and was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Delhi Jal Board, where he focused on improving water supply and Yamuna river cleanup efforts. He played a pivotal role in AAP’s landslide victory in Punjab in 2022, helping the party secure 92 out of 117 seats.

Later that year, at age 33, Chadha became the youngest Indian ever elected to the Rajya Sabha, representing Punjab. No opposition candidate contested his election. He served as AAP’s leader in the Upper House and was credited with bringing technocratic expertise to policy discussions, particularly in finance and urban governance. In 2023, his personal life also made headlines when he married actress Parineeti Chopra; the couple welcomed their first child, a son, in 2025.

The Breaking Point and Dramatic Exit

By early 2026, cracks had begun to appear. Chadha was removed as AAP’s Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha in April, replaced by Punjab MP Ashok Mittal. Reports cited his prolonged absences from key events and perceived reluctance to confront the BJP aggressively on certain issues. Internal tensions escalated, with both sides trading allegations.

On April 24, 2026, Chadha announced his exit from AAP, citing a deviation from the party’s founding values and a toxic internal environment. In subsequent statements and videos, he described himself as “the right man in the wrong party” and said he refused to be part of alleged wrongdoing. He and the six other MPs formally merged with the BJP, a move that stunned many of his young supporters.

The decision triggered significant backlash, particularly among Gen Z followers who had admired his modern, reformist image. Chadha reportedly lost over a million Instagram followers in a short span, with old clips resurfacing in which he had sharply criticized the BJP.

Legacy and the Road Ahead

Raghav Chadha’s journey—from a promising CA who left corporate life for public service to a high-profile party switcher—captures the complexities and volatility of contemporary Indian politics. Once hailed as AAP’s urban, educated face and a symbol of youth aspiration in governance, he now stands at a new crossroads within the BJP.

Whether his move strengthens his influence or diminishes the credibility he built over more than a decade remains to be seen. For now, the “prodigy who walked away” continues to be one of the most talked-about figures in Indian politics, embodying both the promise and the unpredictability of a career forged outside traditional power structures.
