Naik Arvind Kumar: The 9 Para Special Forces Hero Who Laid Down His Life for the Nation

Naik Arvind Kumar, a valiant soldier of the Indian Army’s elite 9 Para (Special Forces), made the ultimate sacrifice on 5 May 2023 during a fierce counter-terror operation in the forests of Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir. His bravery and unwavering commitment to duty exemplified the highest traditions of the Indian Armed Forces.

A Son of the Soil

Born in the picturesque village of Suri (Marhun) in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, Naik Arvind Kumar was the youngest son of Shri Ujjwal Singh and Smt Nirmala Devi. He had an elder brother, Bhupinder Kumar. From a young age, Arvind was inspired by a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to serve the nation. In 2012, he joined the Indian Army and was soon inducted into the prestigious 9 Para (Special Forces) battalion, known for its rigorous training and high-risk operations.

A dedicated family man, Naik Arvind Kumar was married to Smt Bindu Devi. The couple was blessed with two young daughters, Shanvi and Shanvika. Despite the demands of military life, he remained deeply connected to his roots while excelling in his professional duties.

Distinguished Service Record

With over 11 years of exemplary service, Naik Arvind Kumar had earned a reputation as a skilled and reliable operator. He had served with the 51 Special Action Group (SAG) of the National Security Guard (NSG), where he was awarded the prestigious “Top Men” badge. He also participated in international air assault training and represented the Army in athletics and shooting competitions, showcasing his all-round excellence as a soldier.

The Rajouri Encounter

In early May 2023, Naik Arvind Kumar’s unit was deployed in the sensitive Rajouri sector following intelligence inputs about terrorists hiding in the dense Kandi Forest area. The operation, which began on 3 May, turned intense on the morning of 5 May when the troops made contact with heavily armed terrorists concealed in a cave amidst steep cliffs and thick vegetation.

A fierce gunfight erupted. The terrorists detonated an explosive device, injuring several soldiers. Undeterred by the grave danger, Naik Arvind Kumar and his comrades continued to engage the enemy with courage and determination. In the line of duty, he made the supreme sacrifice along with four other brave soldiers: Havildar Neelam Singh, Lance Naik Ruchin Singh Rawat, Paratrooper Siddhant Chettri, and Paratrooper Pramod Negi.

For his gallantry, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice, Naik Arvind Kumar was posthumously awarded the Mention-in-Despatches.
