Tura, May 6, 2026: Rongara-Siju MLA and former Cabinet Minister Rakkam A. Sangma has expressed gratitude to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for sanctioning the much-awaited Chokpot–Siju–Karukol road project, estimated at ₹130 crore.
In a statement, Rakkam Sangma described the tender issuance as a “historic step” for the people of South West Garo Hills. He noted that the project, which had been pending for years, will dramatically improve road connectivity in the region.
The road is expected to provide better access to essential services such as healthcare and education, while also unlocking the area’s tourism potential, particularly destinations like Wari Chora. Local residents anticipate new livelihood opportunities and overall economic growth once the improved infrastructure is in place.
The project was originally sanctioned around 2017 with a higher estimated cost, but work had stalled. The fresh impetus under the Conrad Sangma-led government has been welcomed by locals as a long-pending demand finally being addressed.
Rakkam Sangma expressed confidence that the project would be executed in a timely and quality manner. He assured full support from his side to ensure smooth implementation and minimal hurdles during construction.
This development forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to strengthen infrastructure across the Garo Hills region, aiming to bridge long-standing connectivity gaps in remote and underdeveloped areas.
