100th N-Gen Post Office Inaugurated at NEHU, Shillong

Shillong, May 6, 2026: Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, virtually inaugurated the 100th Next Generation (N-Gen) Post Office at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, Meghalaya today. The milestone event marks a significant step in modernizing postal services across university campuses in India.

The revamped facility transforms NEHU’s existing sub post office into a modern, tech-enabled hub designed specifically for students and the academic community. Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister highlighted the initiative’s focus on blending traditional postal services with contemporary digital solutions to better serve young users.

What is an N-Gen Post Office?

N-Gen Post Offices are part of India Post’s flagship modernization drive. These upgraded facilities offer:

  • Comprehensive digital and tech-enabled services, including speed post, savings bank accounts, postal insurance, Aadhaar-related services, and digital payments.
  • Youth-centric amenities such as high-speed Wi-Fi, comfortable seating areas, and contemporary interiors that create a welcoming environment for students.
  • A seamless mix of heritage postal functions with modern infrastructure, making postal services more accessible, efficient, and appealing to the younger generation.

The N-Gen initiative aims to position post offices as vibrant community hubs rather than conventional service counters. Similar N-Gen facilities have already been established at prestigious institutions like IIT Madras, IIT Hyderabad, Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, and others across the country.

Significance of the Milestone

With the inauguration at NEHU, India Post has successfully rolled out its 100th N-Gen Post Office. This achievement underscores the Department of Posts’ commitment to enhancing citizen-centric services, particularly in educational institutions and the North Eastern Region.

The project aligns with the broader vision of transforming India’s postal network into a digitally empowered ecosystem while preserving its core role in connecting communities. NEHU students and campus residents are expected to benefit from faster, smarter, and more convenient postal services in a student-friendly setting.

This development comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen postal infrastructure nationwide, with a special emphasis on making services more relevant to youth and academic ecosystems.
