Contract for Shillong Airport Expansion Awarded: A Game-Changer for Meghalaya

Shillong, May 7, 2026 — In a significant development for air connectivity in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced that the contract for the expansion of Shillong Airport (Umroi Airport) has been officially awarded by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The project, estimated at approximately ₹119.44 crore, focuses primarily on extending the runway to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. This upgrade is expected to transform the airport’s operational capacity, allowing for increased flight frequency and the introduction of new routes.

According to CM Sangma, the expansion work is slated for completion within 15 to 18 months. The project also includes associated infrastructure upgrades to support smoother operations and enhanced passenger facilities.

Speaking on the development, the Chief Minister described the initiative as a “game-changer” for the state. The improved airport infrastructure is anticipated to give a major boost to tourism, trade, and overall economic growth in Meghalaya. Better air connectivity is expected to make the state more accessible to domestic and international visitors, unlocking the immense tourism potential of the region’s hills, valleys, and cultural heritage.

The contract was awarded to KCC Buildcon Pvt. Ltd. following the tender process. Environmental clearances for the project had already been secured earlier, paving the way for swift commencement of work.

This development aligns with the Central Government’s broader push to strengthen aviation infrastructure across India’s Northeast. For Meghalaya, the runway extension marks a long-awaited upgrade that residents and stakeholders have been advocating for years.

With the expansion, Shillong Airport is poised to play a pivotal role in the state’s future growth story, enhancing not just mobility but also employment opportunities during and after the construction phase.

The state government continues to work closely with the AAI on complementary improvements, including potential terminal upgrades, to ensure a holistic development of airport facilities.
