Meghalaya Government Announces Major Expansion of NCC into Rural and Remote Areas

Shillong, May 7, 2026 – In a significant move to empower youth across the state, the Meghalaya government has unveiled plans to extend the National Cadet Corps (NCC) programme deep into rural and remote regions. The initiative was announced on May 5, 2026, during the NCC North Eastern Region Annual Awards ceremony held in Shillong.

Currently, NCC activities in Meghalaya are largely limited to urban educational institutions, particularly in and around Shillong. This has left a large section of the state’s young population, especially in far-flung areas, without access to the benefits of the programme. The new plan aims to bridge this urban-rural divide by establishing NCC units in schools and colleges located in remote parts of the state.

The expansion focuses on providing equal opportunities for leadership development, discipline, community service, national integration, and personality growth to cadets from all backgrounds. With nearly 59% of Meghalaya’s population below the age of 25, officials believe this step will play a crucial role in harnessing the potential of the state’s youth and contributing to nation-building.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla stressed the importance of taking NCC beyond city limits. “The government is committed to ensuring that NCC reaches every corner of Meghalaya. We want to move beyond urban areas and extend its benefits to our rural and remote youth,” he said. The minister also mentioned that discussions are underway with the NCC Director General, who is expected to visit Shillong soon to finalise strategies for increasing enrolment and strengthening the rural presence.

NCC Additional Director General Anurag Vij encouraged greater participation from parents, educational institutions, and students. He highlighted the diverse opportunities available to NCC cadets, including participation in prestigious national events such as parades at Kartavya Path in New Delhi.

The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to expand NCC coverage, particularly in border and underserved districts. Once implemented, the programme is expected to instil values of discipline, confidence, and patriotism among thousands of young people in Meghalaya’s hinterlands.

This development comes as welcome news for educators and community leaders in remote areas, who have long sought such structured youth development programmes. Further details on the rollout, including enrolment procedures and establishment of new units, are anticipated following the Director General’s visit.

The Meghalaya government’s proactive approach signals a strong commitment to inclusive youth empowerment and could serve as a model for other states in the Northeast region.
