Mizoram Pushes for Men’s Hockey Academy and More SAI Centres to Boost Sports Infrastructure

New Delhi, May 7, 2026 – In a significant step towards strengthening sports development in the state, Mizoram has urged the Union Sports Ministry to establish a dedicated men’s hockey academy and set up additional Sports Authority of India (SAI) training centres.
Mizoram Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar met Union Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao in New Delhi on May 6, 2026, to press these demands. The state government highlighted the need for a specialised men’s hockey academy to nurture young talent and revive Mizoram’s rich hockey legacy.
Focus on Balanced Growth
While Mizoram has made notable strides in women’s hockey—with several players selected for national centres of excellence—the state is now prioritising structured development in men’s hockey. Officials proposed expanding training facilities under the ‘Empowering Mizoram Sports’ initiative, seeking new SAI centres for key disciplines including hockey, badminton, archery, and wrestling.
The proposals aim to create a robust grassroots ecosystem that can produce more national and international-level athletes from the state.
Building on Existing Momentum
Mizoram has a proud history in hockey and has shown promising signs in recent years, particularly among its youth. The push for a men’s academy is seen as essential to ensure balanced progress across genders and disciplines. Discussions during the meeting also focused on upgrading existing infrastructure to support long-term talent development.
Union officials are understood to be supportive of the initiatives, which align with the Centre’s broader goals under schemes like Khelo India to promote sports in the Northeastern region.
This development reflects Mizoram’s strategic vision of using sports as a tool for youth empowerment, discipline-building, and enhancing state pride on the national stage. Further details on the proposals are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks.
