Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has declared total assets worth Rs 85.87 lakh in his latest election affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The affidavit, filed for constituencies including Nandigram and Bhabanipur, presents a modest financial picture for the prominent politician, especially when compared to many of his peers in Indian politics.
Strikingly Frugal Disclosures
Adhikari’s declaration stands out for its simplicity:
- Cash in hand: Just Rs 12,000
- Vehicles: None (no car or any other vehicle)
- Gold, silver or jewellery: Nil
His movable assets total approximately Rs 24.57 lakh, which include bank deposits, postal savings, investments in Kisan Vikas Patra (Rs 60,000), National Savings Certificates (around Rs 5 lakh), shares and bonds (Rs 14,000), and other minor financial instruments and insurance policies.
Immovable assets are valued at Rs 61.30 lakh. These primarily consist of agricultural land (about 2.46 acres), a residential building/house measuring roughly 4,500 sq ft in Karkuli, a flat, and other land parcels.
Clean Balance Sheet
The BJP leader has reported zero liabilities. There are no outstanding loans, government dues, or debts mentioned in the affidavit. This debt-free status adds to the transparency of his financial profile.
Income Shows Steady Rise
While his asset base remains relatively modest, Adhikari’s declared income has shown an upward trend over the years. In FY 2024-25, his income stood at approximately Rs 17.38 lakh, a significant increase from earlier years such as Rs 8.13 lakh in 2020-21.
Comparison with Previous Affidavit
Compared to his 2021 declaration (when his assets were reported between Rs 90 lakh and Rs 1.10 crore), the current filing shows a slight decline in total worth. Movable assets have decreased noticeably, while immovable assets have remained largely stable or undergone minor revaluation.
Other Details
Adhikari is currently facing multiple criminal cases (reportedly 25–29), most of which were registered after his high-profile switch from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to the BJP in 2020. However, no convictions have been reported in these cases as per the affidavit details.
It is important to note that Indian election affidavits are self-declared documents and not subjected to independent audit. They serve as a tool for public transparency, though actual wealth may vary due to valuation methods, assets held by family members separately, or other unlisted holdings.
Suvendu Adhikari continues to be a key face of the BJP in West Bengal, known for his strong organisational presence in the Purba Medinipur region. His latest asset disclosure once again highlights a relatively austere public financial image amid the high-stakes political battleground of the state.
