Meghalaya Government Announces Revised Minimum Wage Rates Effective April 1, 2026

Shillong: The Government of Meghalaya has officially revised the minimum wage rates for workers across various sectors in the state. The new rates, notified by the Department of Labour, Employment and Skill Development, came into effect from April 1, 2026.

The revision, issued under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, applies to 29 scheduled employments. These include agriculture, construction, road transport, shops and establishments, hotels and restaurants, domestic workers, security guards, and several other categories.

Revised Daily Minimum Wages (w.e.f. April 1, 2026)

The updated wages follow a uniform skill-based structure and are consolidated (inclusive of Variable Dearness Allowance). The revised daily rates are as follows:

  • Unskilled Workers: ₹555 per day
  • Semi-skilled Workers: ₹598 per day
  • Skilled Workers: ₹640 per day
  • Highly Skilled Workers: ₹682 per day

These rates supersede the previous minimum wage order issued in July 2025. The Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) component will continue to be reviewed every six months based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to account for inflation and rising living costs.

Key Provisions

Employers are required to provide a weekly day of rest to workers. Overtime work must be compensated at double the normal wage rate. The notification aims to ensure fair wages for workers while balancing the economic realities of the region.

This revision positions Meghalaya among the states with relatively higher minimum wages in Northeast India. Labour department officials have urged all employers, contractors, and establishments to strictly comply with the new rates to avoid penalties under the relevant laws.

The complete official notification has been published in the Meghalaya Gazette and is available on the website of the Labour Commissioner, Government of Meghalaya.

Workers and employers seeking clarification regarding specific sectors or zones are advised to contact the nearest Labour Enforcement Office or visit the department’s portal for detailed guidelines.
