The Pentagon has begun releasing a fresh batch of previously classified documents and media related to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), commonly known as UFOs. The release, which started on May 8, 2026, stems from a directive issued earlier this year by President Donald Trump aimed at increasing public access to records concerning UAP, potential extraterrestrial activity, and related government investigations.
This marks the first installment in what officials describe as a “rolling” declassification process. Tens of millions of records across multiple agencies are under review, with additional tranches expected every few weeks. Contents of the Initial Release
The first batch, labeled Release 01, includes approximately 162 files. Among them are:
- Over 120 PDFs consisting of documents, eyewitness reports, internal memos, and historical records. Notable items include a large FBI file spanning 1947–1968 on “flying discs” and public sightings, alongside more recent military reports from regions such as Iraq, Syria, the UAE, and Greece.
- 28 videos totaling around 41 minutes, primarily grainy military and infrared footage of unidentified objects, lights, and anomalies captured between 2020 and 2026. The collection also features older audio recordings, such as one from the 1965 Apollo era.
- More than 14 images and photographs, including murky stills, points of light, unusual shapes, and select NASA materials from Apollo missions, some referencing lunar surface sightings reported by astronauts including Buzz Aldrin.
Government statements stress that these files represent unresolved cases where available data is insufficient for definitive explanations. Resolved incidents continue to be managed separately by the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). Officials are encouraging public and independent analysis while noting that the public may draw its own conclusions from the materials.
Nature of the Evidence
The released imagery and footage largely align with longstanding UAP reports: ambiguous lights, orbs, tic-tac-shaped objects, and disc-like forms. Specific examples include military operator sightings in African airspace in 2025, objects observed over the East China Sea and Arabian Gulf, and various historical references. No conclusive evidence of extraterrestrial life or reverse-engineered alien technology has been disclosed in this batch.
The initiative builds upon prior AARO efforts but is positioned as a broader, historic step toward government transparency on the topic. Public reactions have been mixed, with some expressing excitement over potential revelations, others voicing skepticism, and a few viewing the releases as possible distractions.
