Chennai, May 9, 2026: In a historic political breakthrough, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is poised to form the next government in Tamil Nadu after securing crucial outside support from multiple parties, ending decades of Dravidian dominance in the state.
TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections with 108 seats in the 234-member house, falling just short of the 118-seat majority mark on its own. However, post-poll negotiations have yielded firm backing from key allies, pushing the coalition’s strength past the required threshold to approximately 120-121 MLAs.
Decisive Support from Allies
- Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK): Extended unconditional support with its 2 MLAs.
- Indian Union Muslim League (IUML): Offered backing with 2 seats.
- Indian National Congress (INC): Provided support with around 5 seats.
- Left Parties (CPI and CPI(M)): Extended support with a combined 4 seats (2 each).
Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Saturday evening for the fourth time in recent days and formally staked claim to form the government with letters of support from these parties. He is scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 3 p.m.
A Seismic Shift in Tamil Nadu Politics
TVK’s impressive debut performance has dramatically disrupted the long-standing duopoly of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The DMK secured 59 seats, while the AIADMK won 47, leaving both major Dravidian parties in opposition.
The outcome marks the first time in over 50 years that a non-Dravidian party-led formation is set to govern the state. Vijay’s campaign, built on a welfare-oriented manifesto, strong urban and northern outreach, and his massive personal popularity, resonated widely with voters seeking change.
Political observers view this as a landmark moment similar to the rise of M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) in the 1970s — another actor who successfully transitioned to chief ministership. TVK’s ability to cobble together support from parties previously aligned with the DMK-led alliance underscores the fluidity of post-poll Tamil Nadu politics.
As Vijay prepares to assume office, attention now turns to the composition of his council of ministers and the policy priorities of the new government. The arrangement is expected to function as a coalition or minority government with outside support.
This development brings an end to days of political suspense and horse-trading speculation following the election results. Tamil Nadu stands at the cusp of a new political era under the leadership of its latest star-turned-statesman.
