From ₹1 Crore Job to UPSC AIR 1: The Inspiring Journey of Kanishak Kataria

In an era where lucrative corporate careers often define success, Kanishak Kataria’s decision to walk away from a high-paying job and pursue a life in civil services stands out as a powerful example of purpose-driven ambition. An IIT Bombay graduate, Kataria left behind a ₹1 crore-per-year position in South Korea to prepare for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination. In 2018, he achieved what many dream of — securing All India Rank 1 in his very first attempt.

Born with a strong academic foundation, Kataria completed his B.Tech in Computer Science from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Like many bright engineering graduates, he stepped into the corporate world and secured an enviable role as a Software Engineer at Samsung in South Korea. The package, reportedly around ₹1 crore annually, offered financial stability and global exposure that most professionals aspire for. Yet, Kataria felt a deeper calling to serve the nation through the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

His preparation journey was marked by discipline, consistency, and strategic planning. He chose Mathematics as his optional subject, leveraging his engineering background. Despite the intense competition and vast syllabus, Kataria cleared the exam with flying colours, scoring 1121 marks overall. He was eventually allotted the Rajasthan cadre and continues to serve as an IAS officer.

What makes his story even more remarkable is the role of his emotional support system. Kataria has repeatedly credited his then-girlfriend and now wife, Sonal Chouhan, for being his pillar of strength throughout the grueling preparation phase. Sonal, also an IIT Bombay Computer Science graduate, stood by him during the highs and lows of UPSC preparation. Their relationship, which began during their college days, is often celebrated as a modern example of mutual support and understanding between two ambitious individuals.

In various interviews and motivational sessions, Kataria has highlighted how Sonal’s encouragement helped him stay focused and resilient. In a world where UPSC preparation often demands isolation and immense personal sacrifice, having a supportive partner can make a significant difference — something Kataria openly acknowledges.

Kataria’s success story continues to inspire thousands of UPSC aspirants across the country. It challenges the notion that high-paying jobs are the ultimate goal and reinforces the idea that fulfillment often lies in aligning one’s career with personal values and a sense of public service.

From a plush corporate life abroad to the demanding yet rewarding world of Indian bureaucracy, Kanishak Kataria’s journey is a testament to the power of determination, timely decisions, and the strength of meaningful relationships. For many young Indians torn between lucrative offers and competitive exams, his path serves as a beacon — proving that with the right mindset and support, even the toughest goals are achievable.
