Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay Promises White Paper on State’s Finances

Chennai, May 10, 2026: In his first public address after being sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. Joseph Vijay, popularly known as actor Thalapathy Vijay and leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), announced that his government will soon release a comprehensive white paper on the state’s financial position.

Vijay, who assumed office following TVK’s impressive victory in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, highlighted the challenging fiscal situation inherited by the new administration. He stated that the state is grappling with a debt burden exceeding ₹10 lakh crore from the previous DMK regime (2021–2026).

“The people of Tamil Nadu deserve complete transparency. We will release a white paper that clearly lays out the true state of Tamil Nadu’s finances,” Vijay said. He emphasised that the document would serve as a foundation for informed decision-making and help the government fulfil its election promises in a responsible manner.

The Chief Minister described the move as part of his commitment to run a transparent and accountable government. He noted that a thorough review of the state’s finances is essential before proceeding with major welfare measures and developmental initiatives.

On his very first day in office, Vijay also signed files approving key promises from the TVK manifesto, including the provision of 200 units of free electricity to domestic consumers. These early actions signal the new government’s intent to deliver on its commitments while addressing the fiscal constraints.

The announcement of the white paper has been welcomed by supporters and political observers as a step towards greater fiscal accountability in the state. No specific date for the release of the white paper has been announced yet, but it has been positioned as one of the immediate priorities of the new administration.

This development marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, with TVK emerging as the dominant force after the elections. The white paper is expected to provide detailed insights into revenue, expenditure, debt, and pending liabilities left behind by the previous government.
