In recent years, the personal rapport between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become a defining feature of bilateral diplomacy. Dubbed “Melodi” — a portmanteau of their surnames — this close working relationship has propelled India-Italy ties to new heights, culminating in the elevation of their partnership to a full Strategic Partnership in 2023 and the launch of an ambitious Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025-29.
The foundation for this strengthened relationship was laid during Meloni’s landmark visit to India in March 2023 — her first to Asia as Prime Minister. She was also invited as the chief guest at the prestigious Raisina Dialogue. During the visit, both leaders formally upgraded bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership, signalling a clear intent to move beyond episodic engagement toward structured, long-term collaboration. This upgrade marked a significant departure from the relative diplomatic distance that had characterised ties in the preceding decade.
At the heart of the transformation is the visible personal chemistry between the two leaders. Their warm interactions — marked by candid conversations, shared selfies, and light-hearted moments at multilateral forums such as the G7, G20, and COP summits — have captured public imagination in both countries. The “Melodi” narrative has humanised high-level diplomacy, making the partnership more relatable while reinforcing mutual trust at the political level.
This personal rapport has translated into concrete outcomes. In November 2024, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, India and Italy signed the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29. The five-year roadmap identifies ten priority areas for cooperation, including:
- Enhanced political dialogue and high-level exchanges
- Deeper economic and trade ties, with a focus on green technology, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and support for small and medium enterprises
- Defence and security collaboration, including counter-terrorism efforts
- Energy transition, renewables, and climate action
- Science, technology, innovation, space, and startup ecosystems
- Connectivity initiatives, notably support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC)
- Greater people-to-people ties through culture, education, migration, and mobility
Bilateral trade, which has hovered around $15 billion in recent years, is expected to receive fresh impetus under this framework. Defence co-production, technology partnerships, and joint ventures in the energy sector are also gaining momentum. Both nations see strong complementarity: Italy brings world-class expertise in design, precision manufacturing, and renewable energy, while India offers a massive market, a vibrant startup ecosystem, and rapid economic growth.
The partnership is anchored in shared values — democracy, rule of law, and a rules-based international order — as well as converging strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. By focusing on pragmatic cooperation rather than ideological alignment, Meloni and Modi have successfully moved the relationship past earlier frictions and positioned it as a model of purposeful middle-power collaboration.
As the Joint Strategic Action Plan enters implementation, India-Italy relations stand at an inflection point. The “Melodi” dynamic has not only accelerated cooperation across defence, energy, technology, and economics but has also injected momentum that promises sustained progress through the remainder of the decade. What began as personal chemistry between two leaders has evolved into a robust strategic partnership with the potential to deliver tangible benefits for both nations and contribute positively to regional and global stability.
