The Mizo Blues Singer Who Went Viral in Shillong

In the summer of 2025, a powerful, barefoot performance at Yeastern Civilization brewery in Shillong, Meghalaya, captured the hearts of music lovers across India and beyond. The singer was Chalthanzawna Fanu, better known as Chali or Chali Evenflow — a Mizo artist whose soul-stirring rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Everything Is Broken” turned her into an overnight sensation.

Draped in a traditional Mizo puan with a Naga shawl wrapped around her shoulders, Chali delivered the song with raw emotion and unfiltered blues intensity. The video, shared widely by Shillong-based blues vocalist Tipriti Kharbangar (Lil Mama Tips), quickly crossed millions of views. Viewers were mesmerized not just by her voice but by her commanding stage presence and the unmistakable cultural pride she carried.

Roots in Aizawl

Chali hails from Aizawl, Mizoram. Her father, a singer-songwriter, played a pivotal role in shaping her musical journey. He introduced her to blues legends like B.B. King and Buddy Guy, even translating their songs into the Mizo language. Chali began experimenting with the guitar at a young age, teaching herself by ear and through YouTube tutorials.

Her first taste of local fame came through a home video where she sang Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.” At just 15, she performed with the Mizo band Laikai Rock, fearlessly covering Janis Joplin. Her big break arrived in 2016 when she joined Evenflow, an Aizawl-based band she had long admired.

Evenflow: Blending Blues with Northeastern Soul

Originally a church gospel band, Evenflow evolved into a blues and rock outfit that incorporates classic rock, country, and distinct Northeastern flavors. Chali serves as the lead vocalist alongside bandmates she affectionately calls “uncles.” The group has performed at major festivals including Mahindra Blues and has taken the stage internationally.

Chali’s style stands out for its authenticity. She channels the blues’ timeless themes of struggle and redemption while staying deeply rooted in her Mizo identity. Traditional textiles and shawls often become part of her stage look, creating a visual and emotional fusion that feels both global and deeply local. For her, performing is more than entertainment — it is a way to transform personal and collective pain into something beautiful.

Her powerful vocals earned her the Best Vocalist award at Mizoram’s YMA Beat Contest in 2017, and she continues to build on that recognition.

A Moment for the Northeast

The viral Shillong performance did more than showcase one singer’s talent. It shone a spotlight on the vibrant, often under-appreciated independent music scene in India’s Northeast. Chali’s success highlighted how artists from the region are confidently blending global genres with their own cultural expressions.

Fans now know her as the “Bad Blues Woman” on social media. She can be found on Instagram as @chali_evenflow, while the band operates under @evenflow_aizawl. Clips of her Shillong set and other performances continue to circulate widely on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.

As Chali’s journey unfolds, she remains a proud representative of Mizo and Northeastern artistry — proving that blues, born far away, can find a powerful and authentic voice in the hills of Mizoram.
