Shillong, May 11, 2026: The Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Mawlai Mawiong, which has remained largely non-functional for several years, is set to resume operations once the Umiam Dam bypass road and its new bridge are fully completed, according to Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
Speaking on the development, the Dy CM, who also holds the Transport portfolio, stated that only 4-5% of the work remains on the critical bypass road project. He expressed confidence that the remaining portion would be finished shortly, paving the way for the ISBT’s reopening.
The Umiam bypass road has been designed primarily to divert heavy vehicles, including inter-state buses and trucks, away from the existing Shillong-Umiam stretch and the sensitive Umiam Dam area. Once operational, the new route is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on city roads, ease the burden on the main highway, and provide a safer and more efficient corridor for long-distance travel.
In preparation for the reopening, the Deputy Chief Minister has directed concerned officials to clean and maintain the ISBT premises so that the terminal is fully ready for passengers and bus operators as soon as the bypass road is inaugurated.
The Umiam bypass project forms part of broader infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving connectivity around Shillong and addressing long-standing traffic bottlenecks in the state capital region. The terminal’s revival is likely to benefit inter-state commuters, transport operators, and the overall economy of Meghalaya by restoring a dedicated hub for bus services.
Officials have indicated that the bypass road could be opened for heavy traffic in the coming weeks, subject to the final completion of the remaining works and necessary safety inspections.
This development brings renewed hope for smoother inter-state connectivity and marks a positive step forward in Meghalaya’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its road infrastructure.
