Wayne Rooney Hospitalised After Hand Injury During BBC Filming with Jordan Pickford

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been hospitalised following a hand injury sustained while filming a light-hearted segment for his BBC podcast.

The incident occurred earlier this week at Everton’s Finch Farm training ground during goalkeeping drills for The Wayne Rooney Show. Rooney was attempting to save a penalty from England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford when he dived and injured his left hand.

Appearing on the broadcast wearing a wrist brace ahead of the FA Cup final, Rooney explained the mishap to viewers:

“I went in goal and then it was a great save off Jordan and then I’ve messed my hand up. I’m with a surgeon. I’ve been in the hospital and I’m back on Monday.”

The former Manchester United and England captain has already consulted a surgeon and is scheduled for a follow-up appointment on Monday, 18 May 2026, to determine whether surgery will be required.

Despite the injury, the podcast segment remained largely jovial. Rooney and Pickford, who were briefly teammates at Everton, shared anecdotes, including Pickford’s star-struck first encounter with Rooney while on England duty.

The injury is described as minor and unrelated to Rooney’s playing days, as the 40-year-old retired from professional football several years ago. No further updates on his condition or the outcome of Monday’s medical appointment have been released yet.

Fans will be hoping for a swift recovery for one of English football’s greatest-ever strikers.
