Fresh Political Speculation Grips Meghalaya as BJP Leader Hints at Major Defections

Shillong, May 20, 2026: Political circles in Meghalaya were abuzz with fresh speculation on Monday following statements by senior BJP leader and MLA Alexander Laloo Hek (A.L. Hek), who indicated that several leaders from across the state are in touch with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Hek, however, stopped short of confirming whether Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma was among those in contact.

Speaking to the media, Hek cited the anti-defection law as the reason for not revealing specific names. He claimed that leaders from the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Hills regions had personally met him to discuss joining the saffron party. The remarks have fueled widespread rumours of possible shifts in allegiance ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.

Hek’s comments come amid ongoing efforts by the BJP to strengthen its footprint in the state. He also mentioned that four names are under consideration for the party’s candidature in the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election. Sources indicated that the shortlisted aspirants include M Kharkrang, Wankitbok Pohshna, Ernest Mawrie, and another leader from the Jaintia Hills, though the party is yet to make an official announcement.

Mukul Sangma’s Position Remains Unclear

The ambiguity surrounding Mukul Sangma, the former Chief Minister and current TMC Leader of Opposition, has particularly intensified the speculation. Earlier reports from April 2026 suggested that Hek had approached Sangma, who reportedly asked for time to consider the offer. Hek had then stated that the BJP would give him the necessary space before re-engaging.

However, insiders close to Sangma have dismissed immediate moves, describing his current stance as a “tactical freeze.” Sources within the TMC indicate that the veteran leader is weighing multiple options — including a possible return to Congress or even forming his own regional outfit — and is unlikely to make a major decision before next year. Sangma has maintained a studied silence, recently advising that one should “hold one’s cards close to one’s chest.”

Broader Political Context

The ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of the National People’s Party (NPP) with BJP support, continues to hold power. In this fluid political landscape, cross-party outreach and defection rumours are common, especially as parties position themselves for the next electoral battle.

Hek’s latest remarks are being viewed as a strategic signal by the BJP to project growing momentum and put pressure on opposition ranks. Whether these hints translate into actual political realignments remains to be seen, but they have undoubtedly added a new layer of intrigue to Meghalaya’s already dynamic politics.
