John Travolta Reveals the Story Behind His Viral Beret Transformation That Made Him Almost Unrecognizable

John Travolta, 72, sparked a wave of online buzz at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival with a striking new look that left many fans doing a double take. Sporting cream and black berets, gold- or black-rimmed glasses, a neatly trimmed chin-strap beard, and sharp tailored suits, the Hollywood veteran appeared almost unrecognizable as he walked the red carpet and attended high-profile events.

Travolta was at Cannes for two major reasons: to premiere his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach—a family adventure film based on his 1997 children’s book and co-starring his daughter Ella Bleu Travolta—and to receive an honorary Palme d’Or for his decades-long contribution to cinema.

In interviews, including one with CNN, Travolta explained that the transformation was entirely intentional. Rather than attending simply as an actor, he wanted to fully embody the role of a director for this milestone moment in his 50-plus-year career.

“I’ve been around for over 50 years doing movies, but I can’t tell, when I look back, the difference between the events,” he said. “I want this outing to be a little more memorable.”

He continued, “I said, ‘I’m a director this time. You’re an actor, play the part of a director, look like an old-school director.’ So I looked up pictures from the ’20s, ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, ’60s, and the old-school directors wore berets, and the glasses… I’m doing an homage to being a director, so I’m going to play the part of being a director.”

Travolta drew inspiration from legendary filmmakers like Otto Preminger and Erich von Stroheim. Beyond the homage, the look served a personal, practical purpose: he wanted future photos from the festival to instantly remind him of this specific achievement.

“This was when I directed Propeller One-Way Night Coach, this was Cannes, this was when I won the Palme d’Or,” he noted.

The internet quickly embraced (and playfully roasted) the new aesthetic. Some commenters joked that the beard looked “drawn on,” while others praised the sophisticated, European artsy-director vibe. Travolta leaned fully into the persona, switching between different berets across multiple events, including the premiere of Karma and the photocall for his own film.

He also made headlines for piloting his own private plane to the festival. The honorary Palme d’Or ceremony moved him to tears, and his daughter Ella publicly praised her father’s accomplishment.

What began as a stylistic choice became one of the most talked-about moments of Cannes 2026. For Travolta, it was more than a fashion statement—it was a joyful celebration of a new chapter as a director and a deliberate effort to make this career highlight visually unforgettable.
