New York, May 20, 2026 – Robert Downey Jr. has playfully deferred the decision on a long-awaited third Sherlock Holmes film to his wife and producer, Susan Downey, calling her opinion the decisive factor.
Speaking at the 2026 Lincoln Center Spring Gala on May 18, where both Downey and his wife were honored, the actor was asked about the possibility of reviving the popular franchise. “I don’t know. People are talking about it, but she’s the producer,” Downey said, gesturing toward Susan. He then added with a smile that she has “the last word” on whether another Sherlock Holmes movie will be made.
Susan Downey, who produced the first two films through the couple’s company Team Downey, responded light-heartedly, saying, “It’s the greatest mystery,” which drew laughter from her husband and the audience.
The couple’s comments come amid years of speculation and development rumors surrounding Sherlock Holmes 3. The first film, Sherlock Holmes (2009), and its sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), both directed by Guy Ritchie and co-starring Jude Law as Dr. Watson, were major commercial successes. Despite occasional updates and reported target release dates that have come and gone, no official greenlight has been announced for a third installment.
Susan Downey has long been a driving force behind the franchise and has previously described a potential third film as a priority “when it’s right, with the right people.” Her role as producer gives her significant influence over the project’s future.
