Nagpur: The Orange City of India

Nagpur, the second-largest city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, is proudly known across the country as the Orange City of India. This affectionate nickname reflects its longstanding reputation as a major hub for orange cultivation, trade, and processing.

Why Nagpur Earned the Title

The region surrounding Nagpur enjoys ideal agro-climatic conditions — a unique combination of black cotton soil, moderate rainfall, and a dry winter — that are perfect for growing the famous Nagpur Mandarin (Citrus reticulata). This seedless, juicy, and sweet variety of orange is highly prized for its rich flavour and vibrant colour. Nagpur mandarins are not only supplied across India but are also exported to various international markets.

The city’s central location in India and its well-developed transportation network have helped it emerge as the primary trading centre for citrus fruits. The massive Orange Market (also known as the Fruit Market) in Nagpur is one of the largest of its kind in Asia, where thousands of tonnes of oranges are bought and sold every season.

Economic and Cultural Significance

Orange cultivation provides livelihood to lakhs of farmers in the Vidarbha region. Apart from fresh fruit, the industry supports processing units that produce orange juice, squashes, marmalades, and essential oils. The Maharashtra government and agricultural universities have also promoted research and development to improve yield, disease resistance, and post-harvest management of the crop.

Beyond its economic importance, the orange has become a part of Nagpur’s cultural identity. The city celebrates the fruit through various festivals and events, especially during the winter harvesting season when the orchards are laden with ripe golden fruit.

A City of Many Facets

While famous for oranges, Nagpur is also a major educational, commercial, and administrative centre. It serves as the winter capital of Maharashtra and is known for landmarks like Deekshabhoomi, Sitabuldi Fort, and its lush green spaces. The city’s strategic location has earned it the title of the “Gateway to Eastern and Central India.”

Even as Nagpur continues to modernise with new industries, information technology, and infrastructure projects, its heart remains tied to the golden orange groves that surround it — a sweet reminder of why it will always be remembered as the Orange City of India.
