NEET-UG 2026 Re-Exam: Government Tightens Security and Cracks Down on Fake Paper Leak Channels

New Delhi, May 21, 2026 — In a decisive move to restore confidence in the medical entrance examination system, the Union Government has ramped up security measures for the upcoming NEET-UG 2026 re-examination while launching a major crackdown on misinformation and fake paper leak networks.

The original NEET-UG 2026 examination was conducted on May 3, 2026, but was marred by serious allegations of paper leaks and security lapses. The National Testing Agency (NTA) subsequently cancelled the exam, acknowledging a breach in the command chain. The re-examination is now scheduled for June 21, 2026. Candidates who had registered for the original exam do not need to register again. The re-exam will be free of cost, and fees paid for the first attempt are being refunded.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan chaired a high-level review meeting to oversee all preparations for the re-exam. The meeting focused on ensuring a transparent, fair, and secure conduct of the examination.

Key Measures Announced

  • Crackdown on Fake Channels: Authorities are taking strict action against Telegram channels and other social media platforms spreading fake paper leak claims, rumours, and panic-inducing misinformation. The government is coordinating with major platforms including Telegram, Meta, and Google to proactively identify, block, and remove such content.
  • Enhanced Security Protocols: Security arrangements for the re-exam have been significantly tightened. This includes close coordination with district magistrates and police forces across the country. Additional monitoring at examination centres, secure transportation of question papers, and comprehensive student support systems are being put in place. Officials have described the measures as aiming for “foolproof” execution, drawing parallels with election-level security in sensitive areas.
  • Ongoing Investigations and Reforms: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its probe into the leak network and the so-called “exam mafia.” The NTA is also undergoing structural reforms, including the induction of senior officers and strengthening of its technical and financial wings. Long-term plans include shifting towards fully computer-based testing (CBT) mode in future examinations.

Over 22 lakh aspirants across India have been affected by the developments. The government has reiterated its “students first” approach and has appealed to candidates to rely solely on official communications from the NTA.

Candidates, particularly those in regions like Manipur, are advised to regularly check the official NTA website and mobile app for updates regarding admit cards (expected in mid-June), examination centre details, and helpline numbers.

The developments come amid continued scrutiny of the NEET system following controversies in previous years. With these strengthened measures, the government hopes to conduct a smooth and credible re-examination, safeguarding the future of lakhs of medical aspirants.
