Along with the Muga silk stole, PM Modi also gifted a Shirui Lily silk stole from Manipur, showcasing the diversity of Indian handloom traditions. In some accounts, an Eri silk stole from Assam was included as well. Italian Prime Minister Meloni appreciated the thoughtful cultural presents, which reflect India’s efforts to promote regional craftsmanship on the global stage.
Muga silk, often referred to as Assam’s “Golden Silk,” is a rare and exquisite variety unique to the Brahmaputra Valley. Known for its natural golden hue, exceptional luster, strength, and durability, it can last for generations. Produced through an eco-friendly process by traditional weavers, Muga silk holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag and represents centuries-old handloom expertise of the region. Its natural properties make it one of the strongest silks in the world, resistant to wear and tear while maintaining its sheen over time.
The gift comes during PM Modi’s five-nation tour, aimed at deepening cooperation with Italy in key areas such as trade, technology, defense, and clean energy. Such cultural exchanges have become a hallmark of Modi’s diplomatic engagements, where he frequently presents Indian handicrafts and textiles to world leaders to celebrate the country’s diverse heritage.
