Major General Sunil Sheoran: The Para SF Veteran Known as the “Bullet Catcher”

Major General Sunil Sheoran, SM (Bar), VSM, stands as one of the most respected and battle-hardened officers in the Indian Army. A veteran of the elite 3 Para Special Forces, he has earned legendary status within military circles for his extraordinary courage, leadership, and remarkable survival in combat — qualities that gave him the unforgettable nickname “Bullet Catcher.”

The Origin of the “Bullet Catcher”

The moniker “Bullet Catcher” was not bestowed lightly. Major General Sheoran has survived multiple gunshot wounds during high-risk operations. These include injuries above the heart, on the shoulder, and a severe wound through the cheek and neck area. In each instance, he displayed exceptional resilience, refusing to let injuries derail his commitment to service. This rare ability to withstand and recover from life-threatening combat wounds cemented his reputation in the Para SF and National Security Guard (NSG) communities.

A Distinguished Military Career

Commissioned into the Bihar Regiment in 1987, Sheoran later volunteered for the Parachute Regiment and successfully qualified for the demanding Para Special Forces. His career has spanned some of the most challenging environments and operations in modern Indian military history.

He served at the world’s highest battlefield, the Siachen Glacier, including postings at extreme altitudes such as Darshak post (approximately 19,000 feet). His expertise in high-altitude warfare, counter-terrorism, and special operations made him a natural fit for elite units.

One of his most prominent roles was commanding the 51 Special Action Group (SAG) of the NSG, famously known as the “Black Cats.” In this capacity, he played a key leadership role during the 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attacks in 2008. As part of Operation Black Tornado, his team conducted a prolonged and intense clearance operation at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. The 60-hour mission involved heavy exchanges of fire with terrorists while rescuing hostages. Major General Sheoran shared a close professional bond with the late Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra.

Beyond operational commands, he has served as Commandant of the Parachute Regiment Training Centre and later rose to the rank of Major General. He has held critical appointments including General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 4th Infantry Division (Red Eagle Division) and Additional Director General Infantry.

Awards and Recognitions

Major General Sheoran’s gallantry and distinguished service have been formally recognized through several prestigious awards:

  • Sena Medal (Gallantry) with Bar — awarded twice for acts of bravery in combat.
  • Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) — for exceptional service to the nation.

He is particularly noted for advocating improved equipment and tactical reforms within the NSG to enhance operator safety and effectiveness.

Legacy and Cultural Impact

Major General Sunil Sheoran’s leadership during the Mumbai attacks inspired a character in the ZEE5 web series State of Siege: 26/11, portrayed by actor Arjan Bajwa. His story continues to motivate serving soldiers and new generations entering the armed forces.

In an era of evolving security challenges, officers like Major General Sheoran represent the highest standards of professionalism, sacrifice, and quiet determination that define India’s special forces. From freezing heights of Siachen to the urban battlegrounds of Mumbai, his journey embodies the spirit of “Balidanam Viram” — sacrifice of the brave.

Jai Hind.

His career remains a powerful testament to the courage and resilience of the Indian Army’s elite warriors.
