Goalpara, Assam – In a discovery that could reshape the economic landscape of northeastern India, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has identified significant deposits of critical minerals beneath the Tukreswari Hills and Sijukona Hills in Assam’s Goalpara district. The findings, located near the historic 350-year-old Tukreswari Temple, have sparked optimism among locals who see potential for large-scale development while preserving the region’s cultural heritage.
The GSI’s exploration has revealed the presence of lithium, graphite, cobalt, and vanadium — minerals that are increasingly vital in the global transition to green energy and advanced technology. These resources are essential for manufacturing electric vehicle (EV) batteries, renewable energy storage systems, consumer electronics such as smartphones and laptops, as well as strategic applications in defense, missiles, and space technology.
Preliminary reports indicate promising concentrations of these minerals, ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 parts per million (PPM) in the surveyed areas. While still in the exploration stage, the deposits have generated considerable excitement in Goalpara, a district long seeking avenues for industrial growth and employment.
Local residents view the discovery as a potential game-changer. Many believe it could create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, attract investments, and stimulate ancillary businesses in the region. “This could help India reduce its dependence on imports and even position the country as an exporter of critical minerals,” one local expressed, reflecting widespread community hope.
The find aligns with India’s strategic push to secure domestic supplies of critical minerals. Under the National Critical Mineral Mission (2024–25 to 2030–31), the government has allocated approximately ₹16,300 crore to boost exploration, mining, and processing capabilities. This initiative aims to lessen India’s heavy reliance on imports, particularly from China, for these high-demand resources. Recent agreements signed with national and international companies during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit further underscore the state’s ambition to capitalize on such opportunities.
