Egos of Messi, Mbappé, and Neymar Hindered PSG Success, Admits Former Teammate Presnel Kimpembe

Paris, May 23, 2026 — Presnel Kimpembe, a longtime Paris Saint-Germain defender, has openly acknowledged that the strong personalities and egos of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar created significant challenges within the squad during their time together at the French club.

In a recent interview with RMC Sport, Kimpembe reflected on the high-profile trio that many expected to dominate European football. While praising their individual brilliance, he admitted the chemistry issues were real.

“In terms of egos, it was tough. We have to be honest with ourselves, and even they [the players] acknowledge it. I’m very happy to have played with them,” Kimpembe said.

The French international, who came through PSG’s academy, highlighted the paradox of having such exceptional talent on one team.

“Now we’re going to say it couldn’t work because we didn’t manage to win a Champions League title with all three of them, even if it was a legendary team.”

The Ill-Fated Super Trio

PSG created one of modern football’s most star-studded attacks when Lionel Messi joined Neymar and Kylian Mbappé in 2021. The club invested heavily in the trio with the clear objective of finally conquering the UEFA Champions League. However, despite consistent domestic success in Ligue 1, the team repeatedly fell short in Europe, exiting at various stages including dramatic quarter-final and semi-final defeats.

Reports of internal tensions surfaced regularly during their three seasons together. Issues reportedly included playing styles, penalty-taking duties, preferred positions, and dressing room hierarchy. Neymar himself later suggested that Mbappé’s behavior changed after Messi’s arrival, even using the word “jealousy” in public comments.

Kimpembe’s remarks provide rare confirmation from inside the dressing room. As a player who shared the pitch and training ground with all three superstars, his perspective carries significant weight. He stopped short of assigning blame to any individual, instead framing the situation as a collective challenge that even the players themselves recognized.

A Recurring Theme in Football

The admission underscores a familiar theme in elite football: assembling the world’s best players does not always guarantee success if egos clash and harmony is lacking. Similar dynamics have been observed at other clubs with superstar clusters, where individual brilliance sometimes conflicts with team cohesion under intense pressure.

Despite the disappointments in Europe, Kimpembe expressed gratitude for the experience of playing alongside such icons.

PSG has since moved on from the era of the “MNM” trio. Messi left for Inter Miami in 2023, Neymar departed for Al-Hilal, and Mbappé joined Real Madrid in 2024. The club is now rebuilding under new leadership with a different tactical and cultural approach.

Kimpembe’s comments serve as a candid post-mortem on what was supposed to be PSG’s golden generation — a reminder that talent alone is rarely enough at the highest level.
