From Bollywood Superstar to Spiritual Seeker and Politician: The Extraordinary Life of Vinod Khanna

Vinod Khanna’s life was nothing short of a cinematic saga — one that blended fame, renunciation, heartbreak, redemption, and public service. The actor who dominated Bollywood screens in the 1970s and 80s walked away from stardom at its peak to clean toilets in an ashram, endured personal loss, rebuilt his life, and went on to become a four-time Member of Parliament before his untimely death.

Born on 6 October 1946 in Peshawar (now in Pakistan), Vinod Khanna moved to India after Partition. He grew up in Mumbai and studied at the University of Mumbai before making his acting debut in 1968. His rugged looks, intense screen presence, and charismatic personality quickly made him a leading man. By the mid-1970s, he had become one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars, often sharing the screen with Amitabh Bachchan in blockbuster films.

Some of his most memorable performances came in movies like Amar Akbar Anthony, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, The Burning Train, Kudrat, and Lahu Ke Do Rang. Known for his intense action roles and brooding hero characters, Khanna featured in over 140 films and was celebrated for his effortless stardom.

At the height of his fame in the early 1980s, Vinod Khanna shocked the film industry by taking a sudden break. Deeply influenced by the spiritual teachings of Osho (also known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh), he left behind his flourishing career, wealth, and family to join the spiritual movement. He moved to the Rajneeshpuram commune in Oregon, USA, adopted the name Swami Vinod Bharti, and willingly performed menial tasks including cleaning toilets, washing dishes, and gardening. For several years, the former superstar lived a life of complete simplicity and surrender, far removed from the glitz of Bollywood.

This phase took a heavy toll on his personal life. His first wife, Geetanjali Taleyarkhan, whom he had married in 1971, eventually left him amid the upheaval. The couple had two sons — Rahul Khanna and Akshaye Khanna, both of whom later became actors. The marriage ended in divorce around 1985.

Khanna returned to India in the mid-1980s and gradually resumed his film career, though never at the same level of stardom. In 1990, he found stability and love again when he married Kavita Daftary. The couple had two daughters, Sakshi and Shraddha.

In the late 1990s, Vinod Khanna entered a new chapter — politics. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and contested from the Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab. Demonstrating remarkable popularity and dedication, he won four Lok Sabha elections. His political career was marked by sincerity; he served as a Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism and was known for being accessible to his constituents.

Even while active in politics, Khanna maintained some connection with films and public life. He continued to command respect across party lines for his humility and straightforward nature.

On 27 April 2017, Vinod Khanna passed away in Mumbai at the age of 70 after battling advanced bladder cancer. He was still serving as a Member of Parliament at the time of his death. Tributes poured in from the film industry, political circles, and fans who remembered him as a man who lived life on his own terms.

Vinod Khanna’s journey — from matinee idol to ashram worker, from a man who lost his first family to one who rebuilt it, and finally to a successful politician — remains one of the most unique and inspiring stories in Indian public life. He proved that it is possible to reinvent oneself multiple times, chasing not just success, but meaning.
