KSU Umsning Circle Raises Concern Over Alleged Prayer Restrictions on Christian Students at Kyrdemkulai Agriculture College

Umsning, May 26, 2026: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Umsning Circle has strongly objected to the alleged denial of prayer rights to Christian students at the College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai, in Ri-Bhoi district.

According to complaints received by the students’ union, Christian students were reportedly not permitted to hold prayer gatherings or worship sessions inside the college campus. The students claimed that the restriction was imposed by the college administration due to their faith, forcing them to conduct Praise and Worship sessions outside the campus premises, near Zero Point.

On May 25, 2026, a delegation from the KSU Umsning Circle, led by its President Lestar Nongbet, met with the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Prof. Ram Singh, to address the grievances raised by the affected students.

During the meeting, the KSU expressed serious concern over the alleged infringement on the students’ right to practice their faith. The union firmly stated that no student should be denied the opportunity to pray or hold religious gatherings within the campus on the basis of their religion.

Following the intervention, Prof. Ram Singh reportedly assured the KSU delegation that there would be no further restrictions on Christian students conducting prayers or worship inside the campus. The KSU described the assurance as a resolution to the issue and issued a “final warning,” cautioning that any recurrence of such restrictions would invite stronger action from the union.

The College of Agriculture, Kyrdemkulai, is a constituent college of the Central Agricultural University, Imphal, and caters to students from various parts of the Northeast region. Meghalaya, being a predominantly Christian state, has witnessed several instances where student organisations have actively advocated for the protection of religious freedoms and tribal rights.

The KSU Umsning Circle has urged the college administration to foster an inclusive environment that respects the religious sentiments of all students.
