Nongpoh, May 26, 2026: Ri Bhoi Police in Meghalaya have arrested a man from Rajasthan in connection with a cyber fraud case where the accused allegedly impersonated a senior IPS officer through a fake social media profile and duped a victim into transferring money.
The arrested individual has been identified as Jahul Ali, a resident of Kakrali Meo in Alwar district, Rajasthan. He was apprehended on May 23, 2026, from Jaipur by a team of Ri Bhoi Police.
According to police sources, the accused created a fake social media account impersonating DIG Vivekanand Singh Rathore, an IPS officer. Using this fraudulent profile, he contacted the victim and gained his trust, eventually inducing him to transfer money. The case was registered at Nongpoh Police Station as Case No. 28(05)2026.
The accused has been booked under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act.
Superintendent of Police, Ri Bhoi, Giri Prasad, confirmed the arrest and stated that the operation was carried out through sustained investigation, technical surveillance, and reliable internal sources. Further investigation into the case is ongoing, and police are probing if the accused was part of a larger network.
This incident highlights the rising trend of cyber impersonation frauds across the country, where fraudsters pose as government officials, particularly police officers, to exploit public trust. Authorities have urged citizens to verify the identity of any official contacting them through verified channels and avoid sharing financial details with unverified profiles.
Ri Bhoi Police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
